Who we want come playoff time??
Permalink Closed

Ahh yes following yesterday's question of who we consider to be the Habs MVP...I think it is a two horse race between Huet and Markov. All due respect to Koivu who has played pretty well all season and Souray and Begin who have been brilliant at times it is a two horse race.

My question today is a little different from yesterday following a review of the standings and the habs current hot streak (keep in mind last 10 were against non-playoff contenders) I mentioned this on my blog pre-streak.

Anyways to get to the point Habs can finish pretty much anywhere from 5-8, realistically 5 is extremely unlikely so we will exclude that option for now...so unfortunately no sabres for us...

Which team would you rather face, ranked in my order of preference:

  1. Philadelphia - if they manage to win the division, I would love for us to play them our speed counterbalances their slow defense. And in nets they are solid but perhaps weakest of the 4 contenders.

  2. NY Rangers - Habs always seem able to neutralize Jagr, and the D in NY is perhaps underrated but still not that strong. I think Huet offsets Lundqvist...and our D is better...we would just have to slow the forwards down...plus you gotta love original 6.

  3. Ottawa - some people might have them higher, but they are such a deep team, haven't lost a step despite all their recent injury woes...and living in Ottawa I've seen Emery play often and he is very solid.

  4. Carolina- we just seem to play so badly against them, I think its because they are built similarly to us but they have better scorers.  They will skate all day and all night against you and Gerber is a darn good goalie.

Thats my thought of the day...Let me know what you think..

My list would be the same.

I want the Rangers, for the following reasons:

1) Lundquist is hurt.

2) Jagr is one of the few players that gets booed at the Bell Centre every time he is within 5 feet of the puck, I like boooing Jagr, it's fun, and easy, and it started in 98 when Turner Stevenson shut him down in round 1, so I want it to continue, in fact, I want Jagr to have VERY negative memories about the games he's played in MTL

3) The Rangers have a bunch of power play specialists, although they have been very good five aside this year as many of the guys are a plus, that is due to lundquist, see # 1.

4) I'll still take the old, slow irrelevant flyers

I really don't care who we play. Montreal has been one of the best teams during the second half of the season.  They remind me of Calgary in 2004, who also finished the season strong. If I were the Hurricanes, Senators, Rangers or Flyers, I wouldn't want to play the Canadeins.

I'd pick New York as the team we match up with and can beat. But, we are going to have to get through Carolina or Ottawa at some point. Wouldn't it be great to take them on and win the first round? After that, what's left? Detroit.

If we end in 6th, I want NYR.
If we end 7th or 8th, I want Ottawa.

Y abut thsi way we can hope that someone else takes them out in the first round or if we have to play them in the next round they will be beat and battered

It doesn't matter who we play. If the team is firing on all cylinders, we can take anybody out. This goes for any team in the NHL. Upsets happen when mediocre teams peak and catch fire. Usually this happens when a goaltender catches fire and Montreal is the prototypical case. Just ask the Bruins a few years ago...

I can see why everyone is so scared of Carolina though. Huet's worst GAA in a game comes against the Canes, letting in three goals on 16 shots.

Still, I'm positive about our chances with whoever we play. Playoff hockey is a different beast, and Montreal is a team that appears playoff ready at the moment.

I love my Canadiens as much as the next person but I really think most of you are wearing bleu-blanc-et rouge blinders...the habs are a pretty good team and have been playing well...but don't forget the teams we beat to win 8 of last 10...not a single one of them is playoff bound. Don't get me wrong I think we have a chance to win a series ...but unless half of Ottawa stays injured or Carolina's goaltending melts down...there is no way this team should beat those in a best of 7 series...big test is Thursday night I suppose..but we will have the advantage of playing and Ottawa team that has played the night before...

I really hope my pessimism is misplaced but the final 7 games will tell the story.

No blinders on. But the 7th seeded Habs ousting the almighty 2nd seed Bruins is still fresh in my mind.

Boston was the bigger and better team. On paper, this was a huge mismatch. But the Habs played hard every single game, caught a few lucky breaks and pulled it off.

Why is it so hard to conceive that this will happen again?

Sure Carolina and Ottawa SHOULD beat the Habs. But there's a reason they play the games....

Especially with a hot goalie.
