if you were to pick 1 goalie,2 defensemen, 2 forwards, 1 centerman from the habs this year as all-stars of the canadians,WHO WOULD THEY BE? my choices are goalie- huet(ah...) 2 defense- 1)sourey 2) markov... 2 forwards- ryder and higgons... centre- koivu
It's really a toss-up for me between Bouillon-Rivet and Begin-Bulis in terms of who has played their position best. I would like to add Kovalev, but I feel he can give so much more than he has. Maybe he just needs the right center... :)
In Ryder's defense, I would say that every player has an equal opportunity to put himself in position to score, and to take shots at the net with the intention of scoring. The difference with Ryder is that he succeeds more often than others do. Sure, his linemates contribute to that -- but he's still the one who has to put the puck in the net, which he does pretty well. The guy has a very good shot, as we all know, and I think he has an uncanny sense of where to position himself and how to get open.
Would I like to see him hustle more and give 100% every shift the way Begin does? Absolutely. If he did, the guy might score 40 a year. But in the meantime, I'm still glad to have the goals he's netted, which are more in number than any other player's no matter how it's sliced.
Oh for sure, Desi. I don't think he is a bad player at all or anything like that. I just don't think he is the game breaker that we all hoped for in his rookie year. He's not a pure goal scorer, he's more of an oppotunist and he definitely rely's on his mates to get him the puck. Guys have made very good careers (and HOF careers) out of being garbage men and pluger-type finishers - Andreychuk is the first one that springs to mind.

................. and Phil Esposito, and Steve Shutt, and Brett Hull, and, and, and, ...........
If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. Credit where credit is due - Ryder knows where to go, and gets there more often than others.

Gotta go with Johab's picks. They're exactly what I was thinking. Especially on putting in Rivet over Souray, simply because Rivet has been more consistant.

Ok fair enough, but you can't even put Ryder in their class right now. Their production far exceeded his. He may crest 30 goals this year which is a pretty decent milestone, but guys like Espo were putting up 76 goals in a season.
Brett Hull is one of the greatest pure snipers who ever played and I think we can leave him out of this debate. To call him a garbage man or a plugger is an insult to his legacy. This guy scored in bunches and was extremely consistent.

Of course I'm not putting Ryder in the class of those guys! I was merely adding support for your assertion that so-called "garbage goal" scorers had a gift and were not to be denigrated. Ryder's style may not look pretty, but the results are there. It's not How but How Many.

Right. Someone's gotta bang 'em in. He serves a purpose for sure. I thought that he would develop into more of a pure goal scorer/sniper, but like you say, it's not how but how many.

Buddy I hope you're not implying that Brett Hull is a "garbage goal" type of goal scorer, ever seen his wrist shot or slapper, lol only things that Ryder dreams about having.....
