Many have asked where I have been the last few days. Well at the invitation of my good friend CJ (and thanks to his air miles) my lovely girlfriend Tanya and I flew up on Saturday for the game. Although CJ did not go to the game (he still prefers not to be subjected to the media frenzy and stays home), he did furnish us with 2 seats 3 rows up from the Montreal bench (again Thanks Claude) and a "beer pass" which was 2 punch cards with 10 beer each on them (again..*hiccup*..thanks Claude). Sorry mario this was a last minute thing so I did not have a chance to get in touch and get together with you..next time though.
At any rate, the view behind the bench was very interesting to say the least..and troubling. Guys there is very little cohesiveness on this team. I witnessed bickering, finger pointing and disinterest. I will not point out certain players because, to be honest, the malaise is teamwide. I did hear Kovalev tell Rivet to "F Off" after Rivet suggested that he should have passed the puck in a certain situation. Even my girlfriend (who by the way is a pretty well versed hockey fan in her own right and is a good athlete and soccer player) commented "Geesh these guys do not like each other much do they"?
Things I noticed:
The Downey Fight. The right hand from Roy literally buckled Downney's knees and dropped him. In all my years of hockey I have seen very few punches as hard as that one. Credit to Downey for getting up but I can tell you that the mood on the Pens bench really changed after that
Crosby-will get a case of whiplash pretty soon from snapping his head back everytime an elbow or stick comes near him. Relax Sid it is getting pathetic looking. Oscars were 2 weeks ago
Koivu- tired, disinterested and not himself. I am going to leave teh debate to everyone else on here. But I said that out best players need to be our best players and I stay by that. He has not been. In fact, I will venture to say that aside from the Olympics, this has been his worst season ever. The one thing that was in his favor this year was his plus/minus and defensive play and even that has left him. He was a minus one last night and again took a stupid penalty.
Kovalev- what can I say about this guy? Talent galore but seems content on playing the blame game. Note to Alex. If you are saving it for the playoffs you may want to uncork it early.
The Cube- team totally deflated after he went down. This is a very fragile team and something like this could be it. Did anyone hear the the hammering after he left on the stretcher? That was the nails going into the coffin. At least by the looks of the habs on the bench.
Souray- still screwing up but not as much. Boy does this guy have a shot!! I say get it to him and let him blast away a la Bryan McCabe.
Gainey/Carbo- I saw them have disagreements on at leats 2 occassions about line changes..and I mean visible disagreements where Gainey would just simply overule Carbs. Get her together guys! No wonder the team is in dissaray!
Komisarek- this guys is HUGE up close!! I ha dno idea he was that big.

Hey Barry. Excellent post. Ribeiro had the "mike" on him last night( whenRDS follows one player's soundbites) and he was cheering Kovalev on etc. I thought that was a good sign. But I guess all in all, this team is in trouble.
was listening to the blueline after the game and a caller was commenting on ribs being miked up and on 2 occasions he was asking people (crosby -and roy i think )for thier sticks after the game , what a punk.
Barry thats troubling how can that happen? How does someone offer you a beer pass?
Oh and that stuff you said about the game very intrested it doesn't surprise me and its something that you've been saying all along. I suspect the main culprit is Kovalev as that has always been his rep. But there is a hint of hope in your post, Gainey and Carbo having dissagrements mean that next year maybe all the things that i think Gainey does wrong behind the bench will be fixed. That is if the team doesn't give up on him after seeing him undermined time and time again.

Actually Mulsey..all kidding aside..and hold the laughter lol..but Ribs actually impressed me (ok maybe it was the free beer). This guy is working so hard out there...I think Gainey finally lit a fire under him.

Well dont read to much imnto Carbo and GAiney disagreeing. That is pretty common at all levels and that is hwy you have assistant coaches. To offer differing points of view. The bottm line is that the head coach has the final say. I think (and please take this witha grain of salt..I only sat teher for one game) that from what i saw, Carbo seems to be a better coach than Gainey and this, a s Martha Stewart says, is a good thing. Since he is taking the helm.

In all honesty, Carbo should be the better coach, otherwise who would support him taking over next year?! But another thing that is interesting about them disagreeing is people seem to think Gainey will go really easy on Carboneau because he picked him himself and that he shares all of Gainey's views. Well, I for one like that they don't agree on everything, because ifhe does a bad job maybe Gainey won't keep him.

Good thought.
Anyway, Carbonneau is my favourite post-70s Hab. I'm hoping for big things from him too. Gainey is fine and all so far, but I don't know about how effective a temporary coach can be, especially one who's been upstairs for so long. Personally I preferred Julien as coach, but that didn't really work out so well.

I heard Ribero talking to Crosby on TV. The way I heard it was; Ribero asked Crosby if he could have his stick after the game, Crosby responded, but I couldn't hear what he said. Then Ribero said something that I thought sounded like "psyc", laughed and skated away. I got the impression Ribero was trash talking Crosby.

Excellent. Being a punk can be a good thing, even if Crosby got the last laugh.

It's gamesmanship, it goes on in every sport. I wont say I like the behaviour, but it is part of the game. Sure the Pens won, but Crosby had no goals and only one assist (on the flukey winner) so maybe Ribero had the right idea
Ribs knows what its like to have attention up the ying yang. Back in his junior days he was always being razzed and taunted cause he was the talented one on his team. So he's taking a bit of that towards crosby, i highly doubt he was in the back hallways after the game looking for Sid and his stick.
