Bob Gainey turned down a deal on trade day that would have brought Mike Comrie from Phoenix (22 Goals and 48 Points) for Richard Zednick. Straight Up. I have o admit I do not know what Comrie's salary or contract is, BUT, is it just me or is Bob nuts for turning this down? This guy is a legitimate NHL Center and would have given Saks some breathing room. I would have grabbed that deal in a heartbeat.

I HATE COMRIE. TOTALLY OVERATED. At least Zeddy can get the puck downlow and make some space - Comrie does nothing. Why would we want another small forward

24, the Zednik we are seeing now is definately not the Zednik prior to the trade deadline. Yes, he had a couple of good games prior to the deadline but nothing to convince us that he would become a force again. Straight trade - Zed for Comrie at the trade deadline...go for it! He's 5 years younger than Zednik and 22 goals at this point of the season is respectable.. WE NEED OFFENSE!

I think Gainey has bigger plans for the centre position. He wants a big, skilled centre who shots right. Although Commie is a good player, i'm sure he doesn't fit the long term make-up of this team.

I don't mean to doubt you Barry, but where did you hear this?
And I would have turned down that deal as well. Mike Comrie is a small centerman as many people have mentioned, and is not the player we've been looking for.
Comrie is a puss and cries about everything, we don't need someone like that.
There's a great start for this guy, i like him already. We already have a headcase like Comrie plus Comrie has been traded so much recently there has got to be a reason.

If in fact this information is correct, it would only solidify Comrie's reputation as a self centered individual. Great talent but a reputation as being very selfish on and off the ice, and it would mean the second team to give up on this guy in less than 3 years. If Gretzky was willing to trade him straight up for Zednik then he really must have seen things he disliked in Comrie, because he is trading away his number one center for a player that has played his way down to the third line on a offensively challenged hockey team. Hopefully Gainey is rooting out the malcontents in the Habs dressing room, and acquiring Comrie would only add to that problem. Comrie is also not known for being very diligent when he does not have the puck, so that would not win any favours with Gainey. Also on a team that is not very big up front adding another smurf forward only perpetuates another persistent problem with this team. Despite all those negatives, who would you rather have centering the Habs second line, Riberio or Comrie? Not a tough decision to make. Comrie would generate a lot more offense than Riberio could ever create. Have a hard time believing this deal was proposed.

Hey wright, Gainey must see more than us in Ribs because I remember a couple seasons ago, at deadline, Oilers(at the time) wanted Ribs for Comrie and Gainey wouldn't bite. Anyone else remember that?
What is to miss with Riberio. Watch the guy play for any period of time and all of his liabilities become abundantly clear. Plays way too much on the periphery, and at the first sign of any physical play he completely disappears. 39 points this season, and even with the rule changes that should help this guy most nights he is non existent.

I get you, the rule changes hasn't helped our little guys like you'd think.

True wright, but Ribeiro's gotten stuck in there a little more lately, and shown some passion.
But yeah, Ribeiro will always be a pretty limited player.
Comrie, on the other hand, was not always such a softie. He is a true waste of talent, because he has the kind of compact body and leg strength to hold up when leaned on, but he tends to chicken out these days. Or so I've heard. To be honest I've barely seen him play during his troubled last few years. I remember him more from when he played for Edmonton.

Actually heard it on Team 990 yesterday AM during Bob Mckenzies spot. McKenzie is one of the few sources I trust when it comes to rumours as he seems to have the inside scoop. But the good thing about this board (for ME anyway) is that after reading other people's opinions I sometimes have mine swayed (a few others should be as openminded ). I guess my initial reaction was that the way Zednick has played (or NOT played) this season that I would take a bag of pucks for him. But Comrie seems to have more downside than upside. Now a Ribs/Comrie deal I would take because it is small center for small center (3rd line) and hopefully Bobby could land us a big first line center to supplement Koivu.

I have nothing against Saku, he is who he is. Comes to play ever night. I rather have him be our second line centre but that's not his fault... maybe playing behind a guy like Patrick Marleau. Even guys 6.3 don't play as hard as he does.

nil d, im sorry to ask, im not too familiar with flags, but your avatar is i believe Frances flag with a star on it. Is this to represent a french heritage, or does the star represent something else? Im thinking it may have something to do with your Acadian background? Am i along the right track?

...by the way...i think it is pathetic that because of a few posters we have to limit what we say on here to completely hockey related topics. I for one do not agree at all and i will not be following any unwritten rules made by fans who have problems with casual posts. Im not sure what bothers these members about an off-topic post or 2...or 3... who cares. No one MAKES them read the topic, and if the 5 seconds it takes to figure out that the post isnt hockey related ( most state that they arent ) are so precious, then i think they should be spent on things more important than reading posts. Perhaps saving the world from the dreaded Hallmark Card! Im going to stop now before i get too mad.
