It really should not come as a surprise that the Canadiens are struggling offensively, lack of goal scoring has and is a persistent problem for this team over the past 5 years. This is not a new problem, the Canadiens have consistently ranked in the bottom third in goal scoring through out the 2000's. The Canadiens forwards lack a major physical power forward who could potentially open up room for the smaller Habs forwards. Club really does not have a gunner that scares the opposition. Kovalev is supposed to be the go to guy, but 17 goals does not cut it. Add in the fact that outside of Markov the team does not have a defenceman that can consistently push the puck up the ice effectively and jump into the rush to create scoring chances. The kids may develop, but at this point the team has too many tweeners, guys that can score around 20 goals but skill level not high enough to turn around a game.

It goes with the Habs' philosophy. No real Superstars. A bunch of players that can score 20 goals. We won several cups that way but we had goaltenders that used to win some games single handedly and there weren't so many powerplays. Special teams has become a crucial part of winning in this new league.
