Geoffrion too ill to take part in jersey retirement ceremony

MONTREAL (CP) - Bernard (Boom Boom) Geoffrion will not be able take to part in his jersey retirement ceremony because he is too ill.

The retirement of Geoffrion's No. 5 will still go ahead Saturday at the Bell Centre before Montreal's game against the New York Rangers. Doctors discovered stomach cancer while Geoffrion underwent a surgical procedure last week in Atlanta. A Canadiens spokesman said Geoffrion's condition has deteriorated and he will not attend the ceremony.

The 75-year-old Geoffrion was a scoring star on powerhouse Canadiens teams in the 1950s and early 1960s. He is said to have invented the slapshot.

In 1960-61, the Montreal native became the second player after Maurice (Rocket) Richard to score 50 goals in a season.

Sad! I have to miss this one. I'm going to try to tape it.

Hard to say who'll win but it should be a good one!

Lines all different. I'm confused, but I think Zednik's now on the first line, Ryder on the 4th line and Sundstrom on the 3rd....anyone confirm?

Good first period by the boys, after a biat of a sluggish start.  I thought the Rangers' forechecking was giving the d-men fits at first, but it got better as the period went on.  Nice to see another goal be a defenseman.  Again I say, on the PP, don't get fancy; just fire from the point and jam the net.

Zednik is on the Koivu line with Higgins.  I think you have the other two reversed, but I'm not sure.

I thought the pre-game ceremonies were well done.  In view of the Boomer's death, it was respectful and relatively low-key.  I was fine until I saw all those hands hoisting up the banner, then all the family crying.  The lump in the throat started around then..........

During the commercial break I was switching to the TO/TB game.  Even thought in my head I want the Laffs to win, I found myself hoping TB would score every time they had a chance.  Thank God I don't have to watch that game; it would be too much to take.

Continuing the domination, but can't get another goal.

Also, Markov injured. Disturbing!

Markov came back, then left again.  A lower back problem; hope it's not serious.

I was about to post a post praising Bonk, who was playing a great game, but then his stupid penalty at the end of the second could really hurt.  They'll start the third 5-on-3 for 1:42, with a fresh sheet of ice to make matters worse.  This could make or break this game.

Ward going after Koivu from behind... not one of his friends, I guess! Habs running out of steam after an emotional first two... I think they will hold on though. 5 on 3, let's finish them off! Hope that fan is OK...

Nailbiter....Koivu having a good game but NO FINISH (pun intended)...misses an open net.

Can you dig it!

Huet has not let in a goal since Theo was traded!

What a great victory.  Good game to watch - my heart is down to its normal rate now...........

Koivu played well, but seems to be having no confidence in his scoring abilities.  He had the open net but chose to pass it instead.

With this type of goaltending (stellar) i think we can make some noise in the playoffs at this rate, the boys are confident with Huet, such a different team when he is in, i guess its true, a team plays better hockey with great goaltending.  If it were still Theo, we could be in the leafs position....looking in from outside.  Great game by the boys all around, still not keen on Sundstrom out there, i'd rather see Downey, he has more energy and i can't see Sunny dropping the gloves.  Hopefully Markov's injury is a day or two.....very happy hab fans all around.....GO HABS GO

Gotta say, I like the looks of that Lundqvist also.  What I like is that when a player shoots high, rather than go down to his knees and wave the glove at it (as Theodore does, and even Huet), Lundqvist actually stays up and seems to rise up with the puck and makes it hit the upper part of his chest.  A save he made on Zednik on a 2-on-1 in the first was a good example of that.  I love his style, and think he'll be a big star in this league for a long time.

If my calculator is working right, Huet now has a 2.25 GAA and a .928 save %.  That SP should be close to #1 in the league (Lundqvist right there as well).  He's most impressive.

5 RIP
