The only thing we have to go by is the Saks signing. He is making him the highest paid forward so obviously he wants to win within his contract term.
He must not think that our team is ready this season because he wasn't pro-active. Maybe he's worried that if he brought in key players now that it wouldn't win us a championship because our young guys need more time to mature. It's about timing I guess. Will he wait for the third year of his plan, then fill needs according to where our holes are at that time or does he think that his team will fill those holes from within? Maybe he thinks players like Plecs, Higgins and Markov will offer enough in three seasons to go for it?
He must want to win but worried about going for it too early and mess up his plan especially under a Cap system? Many guestions because I can't get a read on this guy with the moves he's made so far. Picking up a Kovy must mean he does want to win fairly soon. Also he must of thought Bonk was the missing piece at center to make that trade in the off season.
I think all questions will be answered this off season. With the free cap room and all the free agents out there, something has to give.
I get what you're saying but he might wait a couple seasons when his young players are more a factor. Remember there was free agents this past off season also and he didn't make a move with the same holes that we have today.

Another good post AB. I find myself agreeing with you a lot this week. Habs must be winning!
But yeah, I think Gainey does have a plan to go for it about 2 seasons from now. You can sort of see how he's lining up the key ingredients and sticking with the young guys now, giving them a chance to make or break themselves. Doing what he can to solidify a core he can build around.
On the other hand, Huet could keep getting shutouts and we could go all the way in 06! Never know...
Habs need to keep their record in tact of winning a stanley cup in each decade - 1915-1916 / 1923-1924 / 1930-1931 / 1945-1946 / 1955-1956 / 1965-1966 / 1975-1976 / 1985-1986 / 1992-1993.......200????? I'll take any year from now to the end of the decade.....

Oops - spoke too soon! I see it in your blog. Thanks, Mario. Well said.
(And Brooky, this is my post #1917 - the year my dear Mother was born - and she's still going on strong at 88 and change! )
