Why all the dissing of Aebischer - he has great stats!
Permalink Closed

He has a career GAA of 2.32 and a save "percentage" of .915.  I dare say much better than Theo's career stats!

So why is he viewed as being so inferior?

I'd like to hear the reasons if they're other than

(1) he played on better teams

   - or -

(2) he's lousy this year.

Fact is, (1) coming in cold every several weeks is hard, no matter how good the team is, and (2) his stats this year are not great, but still miles ahead of Theo's.

So what's the problem?

Nilsey, the problem is that people fear that he'll get his A game back in Colorado. We have to think of our own team not the Avs. If Ab does the job here, that's all that really should matter

I agree with ya' Nilsey and that is why I posted his stats in the "Theodore was traded" thread. Aebischeur has had an excellent career, but has not been great in the post season. He had a bad start to the season, but has been consistently excellent since December. I think we have a very good to excellent combo right now. I have heard he was going to be a piece to a bigger trade for Bertuzzi, but I think that is done now that Vancouver got a goalie and 3 more D.

The other factor is that he's not been given much of a vote of confidence in Colorado. It's hard going on after Roy.

I'll be interested to see if Montreal freaks him out....

He was quoted as saying Montreal is special because it's the Mecca of hockey...Abby, don't freak out!  Just like Lacroix is telling Theo - RELAX!

i think it would be great for someone to come to Montreal as just another assignment, rather than feel this pressure of "Pleasing the Ghosts"

We are all being hard on him because our team is not the Avalanche.  Goalies tend to play different with a Stanley Cup contender infront of them.  He is now going to a team that cant score goals and has no defense.  Abby may be an adiquate starter, but we need a superstar between the pipes.  Plus what GM in thier right mind brings in another goalie at the deadline when your goalie is the hottest in the league, and not to mention the fact that we dont have a single left winger that should be on our top 2 lines.

Sorry, rw, that answer gets disqualified, since it is merely a longer version of my (1) above.  Gainey traded an injured goalie having a terrible year (to put it charitably) for a good goalie going very well at the moment.  I think I've decided that at this point, I like the trade.

Hey Nil, as for Theo having a terrible year, this is what Quenville said about Abby.

"It's been hard to figure out," Quenneville told me. "(David Aebischer) Abby got off to a 7-0 start and then just went into a funk where he couldn't stop a beach ball
