I hate to say it, because Theo did so much for us, but this was a good trade. In the new NHL, cap room is all, and Theo was never going to be worth that salary playing for us. Maybe he'll blossom in Colorado, but I have a funny feeling he's more Felix Potvin than Patrick Roy.

Anyway, good luck to Theo. I hope he pulls it together.

But what are we to do with the Theo bobbleheads and jerseys we all have?  Johab, you want mine jersey?  $15!!!

Ok, so to me, if you look at the stats and $$$, this is Montreal's gain.  Yes, we now have room for a Jokinen or Luongo or Lecav or (6.3 years to go) Crosby.  Having read everything here, all great points.  Had to be done and opens the door to lots more.  And makes Price @ #5 make sense.  Amen.

Just a thought.... maybe Theo is not as injured as the habs are saying he is. Maybe they made it sound worst so that the trade rumors on him would stop??? I wouldn't be surprised to see him back on the ice sooner rather than later.

Hey AB baby, don't know what's gone on in your life, but I gotta answer this one.  Theo has played and won for us when most normal people would turtle and not get outta bed condsidering what he's been through.

WHO ARE YOU TO REFER TO THEO AS A TROUBLED MIND???  READ YOUR POSTS MAN!!!!  Talk about troubled!  Theo has given what he's made of time and time again in a hockey town so fickle they'd cheer his name endlessly one game and boo him off the damned ice the next.  AND HE STILL CAME BACK TO PLAY.  Yes, that's what he's paid the big budks for.  And YES, that is what we expect of a goalie in Montreal.  However, watch this guy light it up in Denver.

This little "peewee" goalie carried an entire f*****g team on his peewee shoulders into a playoffs we didn't deserve to be in.  AND won games we never deserved to lace up for.

Jose, if you don't already have St. Patty's phone number-get it and give him a call.  I think he'll totally shake your hand and say "Jose, welcome to Colorado - and if you ever visit Quebec again, let's go out for a cold one".

He's been playing badly, yes.  And yes, I have harped on him too.  Maybe moreso because I believed that he would return.  AND YOU MARK MY WORDS, HE WILL - BUT FOR A TEAM IN THE ROCKIES AND NOT IN HABLAND.  For those of you who have said thank God he was traded West, THAT I agree on.

Aebischer's NHL stats:

2005-06 Colorado NHL 43 25 14 2 2477 123 1233 3 2.98 .900
2004-05 HC Lugano Swi 18 - - - 1019 41 - 0 2.41 -
2003-04 Colorado NHL 62 32 19 9 3703 129 1703 4 2.09 .924
2002-03 Colorado NHL 22 7 12 0 1235 50 593 1 2.43 .916
2001-02 Colorado NHL 21 13 6 0 1184 37 538 2 1.88 .931
2000-01 Colorado NHL 26 12 7 3 1393 52 538 3 2.24 .903

He is still young at 28, he is only making 1.9million and he is considered by scouts to be a #1 goalie, not elite, but a definite starter. The salary cap is based on the average salary over the length of the contract, which makes Theo count as 5.1 Vs. the cap. We save 3-3.2 million on this deal. Yeah, it would have been nice to get a draft pick, as well, but the money is worth a lot more... may even be enough to sign Tanguay away from Colorado this summer.
I don't think Gainey is done dealing... I wouldn't be surprised at all if he actually trades away Aebischer to one of the clubs who are still desperate for a goalie. I hear Weinrich is coming to Montreal.

Whew...

Momma bear wasn't quite what I was thinking.

Anyway, point taken for sure. I feel bad being happy with the trade, but I think Theo probably wanted outta here.

Plouf, thanks for keeping me in line!

My point is that AB and others who shall remain nameless are constantly spearing Koivu with ridiculous abandon and I have tried to remain neutral.  However, a comment about Theo needing a padded room for a troubled mind because he can't play hockey and chew gum at the same time is tragic.

Perhaps those of you who-shall-remain-nameless should go back and read some of your past posts about "smurf" and "peewee", then check your "hockey sense" at the door.

Ok, deep breath, I am done.

Hey guys, wow, I'm just surprised now (almost) everyone is screaming why Theo was dealt away, but the whole season complaining how bad he was/is. There were so many problems around him, we ALL should be just glad that Theo's and his $$$ are gone. And about Aebischer ... come on guys ... why should this guy be as bad as you try to make him. Because he's Swiss?????? Huet played in Switzerland too, he's French (not really a hockey nation ...) and did not play better than Aebischer. Anyway, I think there's another deal upcoming, and now we have a healthy low cost no. 1 gk to bring into the game ..... Let's look out for another deal to come today!!!!!

Ouch AB. But how do you really feel?

I'm pleased - and remember this team's being taught defense by the best - Gainey and Carbo! Aebischer will benefit from that. My one concern echoes Desi - not a great message to Huet.

Did anybody think that maybe BG was looking to get some more production out of Streit.  You know, surrounding him with another Swiss player, the some say that he should do with Koivu.

After a sleep.....And-o believes that Gainey should/could have gotten more for a previous Vezina and Hart winner (regardless of the $$$ saved towards the Cap).

...at least a 1st rounder!

I ask...don't you think that Philly would have given Esche and a 1st rounder???

On a serious note, I was a little ticked that BG went and got a goaltender, to be number one or not.  I have always thought of the Habs as a very classy organization, and I know, I know, it is a business, but what kind of message does that send to Huet?  "Thanks for getting us into a playoff spot, but know we want you to share time with another goalie."  I feel like the Habs just treated Huet like a pile of Leaf Logos (a la Brooklyn's avatar).  I hope that Aebischer is great, because there won't be any chance to re-sign Huet this off-season.  Some will say that Huet was going back to Europe anyway, but pay him enough, and he probably would stay.  I am willing to bet that with his play of late, he will get a ton of interest this off-season.

I guess that with the number of games left in the time left in the season, it will be good to have a fresh number one for every game.

I suppose that's me sitting on the fence.

I think that BG needed to get a goalie in return. Huet, although playing great, is unproven over the long-run. He has never had to carry a serious load. The Habs are making a playoff run and need a playoff-experienced goalie. In any case, there's always competition among goalies for the starting role. I don't think that Huet is so fragile and sensitive that the deal will be beyond his understanding.

Hopefully we get Luongo in the off-season (or by 3pm today)!

Could this mean that Ribeiro will start to play better now without his buddies around?  Lets hope.

I'm bothered that habgirl is pissed at me (I won't take it personally because I like Habgirl) but I have to stick with my opinion about Theo. The guy was a troubled mind and there was alot of personal baggage surrounding him!

You of course don't have to believe me on this but the truth will now surface with him out of Habland.

Also, I don't think he was as special in the two playoff series wins as you think. If you remember the reason we won those was because Theo was shaky in the first few games than when facing elimination, the team had to tighten up defensively and the shots against were almost nil. It was a team effort for both series. I think it's exageration to give Theo all the credit. My thoughts remain that he was over-rated and inconsistent throughout his career.

Even though I struck a sensitive cord with the few that really liked Theo, I have to stick to my opinion. He needed to go!

Also he is a small goalie that may never adjust to being smaller with the new goalie restrictions.

I would have figured a draft pick as well or a prospect of some kind. Huge contract to get rid of so it had to be done. I don't think Theo would have made it back in Montreal...to much pressure. Watch him burn it up as an AV Write this down now...Theo will come back to burn us like Roy did. Ironic eh? Same teams. But hey ..pftt..I am not the GM , Gainey is. While you are in the giving mood Bob how about Kovalev for a new set of tires for the Zamboni? Know what bugs me about this trade and about Gainey as a GM? It was only a few short months ago that Gainey thought that Theo was the second coming of Jesus Christ and gave Theo the huge contract. Now he is worth David Abeshier who the Avs do not want..nice...

comon' Barry...use your head.

Absolutely.  All of a sudden posters are singing his praises? Everyone was calling for his head before and now we have apparently given away a "great goalie" for nothing?  This guy was average in 2004 and waaaaaaaay below average this season...actually, the worst goalie in the league.  Theo was getting paid a sh*t load to ride pine.  Theo's value was in the toilet and this was a pretty good offer - the salary dump alone was good.

Aebischer is a good goalie, don't fool yourselves kids.  Just cause you know nothing about him don't jump to any conclusions.
