Same old story with the refs. when Habs play the Laffs. They always have at least one period when they call everything that remotely looks like a penalty against Mtl. Laffs have taken over the shots on goal 21-16 but the Habs have been shorthanded all period. Fortunately Tor hasn't been able to score and they are starting to look a little discouraged.
I agree here. Horrid officiating. It's almost as if they kept calling until the laffs got the two goal lead. It's probably the dream of an NHL ref to officiate a game in TO...so you want to please the home town crowd...but cripes...Pathetic.
Oh ya, then they turn around and call some gay penalties on the Laffs to 'even" it up. Sorry but that two goal lead is tough to recover from.
Nil d wrote: Man, that last-second goal was HUGE! The key to the Habs is simple - stay out of the F#$%$#@%^ penalty box! At least the Habs are "owed" a few in the third. Not supposed to work that way, but it does. (Exhibit A: McCabe's penalty for looking at Downey as he went by.) Question for the rules hounds: with two Habs in the box and a third Hab penalty called (which doesn't start until the first two are done) how do they decide which of the first two guys gets out when the two minutes are up? I believe the play has to stop before either can leave the penalty box, then both could leave but only one could stay on the ice. Am I correct?
But if the play was stopped, they could both go to the bench, or stay, or do whatever the coach wanted, right?
I thought I saw the first guy leave (was it Souray?) while the play was still going on, but perhaps they both stayed in and a guy came in off the bench after the two minutes were up.
I can't say I've ever seen that situation before.
In any event, we have them right where we want them now!

What were the last two Laff goals like? How does Huet look? Is Belfour stepping up against us again? Habtastic-- Edited by Habtastic at 21:28, 2006-03-07
Both Leaf goals on slap shots on the PP. Huet had no chance on the second one, and the first (Sundin) was a howitzer. Huet's looking good, I'd say; as is Belfour.

These penalties are ridiculous! Every single game we get called for numerous lazy penalties. I don't know how our penalty killers are still breathing. How are we supposed to score or stop being scored on if we are always short-handed? Stupid, just plain stupid.
Habtastic
P.S. Looks like the Leaf want this one far more than Montreal. That and I think we are just way too exhausted to keep up.
Why oh why do goalies think they have to leave their nets and play the puck especially when a man short. Major brain cramp. Anyone see Domi making sure there was a drop of blood? Now 5-2. Sad.
Why wasn't there a penalty called against Tor for cross-checking as McCabe hit Higgins from behind as he scored the goal? Reverse the colour of jersey and you can bet there would have been a call. We might as well face it, the Habs will not get a fair shake and will always play short-handed when it comes to games against the Laffs. -- Edited by murphy at 21:58, 2006-03-07

Agreed. The Habs should send a tape to the league on that one. A goal by the Habs does not deny them a power play. That cross-check was brutal.

There it is. Penalties finally caught up with us. How could we have not adapted to the rules yet? Same story game after game. I think above all this has hurt us the most this season. It is too bad because it overshadows all the things we do well and it also limits our scorers. Wake up, les boys!
Good for Higgins! But does it matter that he gets cross-checked from behind into Belfour's skate and blood is drawn? Course not.-- Edited by plouf at 21:54, 2006-03-07
Interesting question. There was blood, but not from the offending played (McCabe). It's not like a high stick, where the stick of the offending player himself caused the blood. Does it matter where the blood comes from, on the hit or the fetch-up?
In any event, it should have at least been a penalty. Brutal.
Did anyone see blood on the Komisarek double-minor against Dummy? I didn't, and the announcers even said there was no blood.
I don't like to complain (well OK I do), but it was like Hockey Night in the Himalayas there tonight; the Habs might as well have been skating uphill. They were 5 on 7 all night!

I am happy with the habs effort tonight. They were a tired bunch.
Why the heck the non call on the Mcabe cross check on Higgins????? Just plain terrible officiating tonight. I swear they wanted the leafs to win this one. sorry Jay, but you can't argue this one.
Koivu??? Okay that's three bland games in a row. Yikes
Higgins...Future habs captain?
Begin. That guy is awsome. Did you see his blocked shot? Guts
Perez This guy looks terrible IMO.
Ribby...Hmmm Still better than he has been all year but...overall not thrilled with his effort tonight.
Kovalev...HELLO??? another so called big gun who is asleep at the wheel. Not happy with him tonight at all.
Rivet solid again. Could he be that habs best d-man in terms of consistency?
Souray looking better and better.
I actually like our core of defensmen now. But we do need some offensive help I think. 48 hours Gainey to do your magic...
i think fatigue kicked in bad penalties ,cant blame them all on the refs considering there were so many huet was tired ,example the sundin goal bad goal ,hindsight says gainey should of started danis bad luck for komi on the 4 minute minor , domi who comes up to his waist just skated into his stick great game by belfour the boys have a few days to get ready for boston
Agree with the bad penalties but some of them were very borderline. The refs have to call the penalties on the Laffs too as they missed a number of them.

Makes no sense at all...........
Just plain terrible officiating tonight. I swear they wanted the leafs to win this one. sorry Jay, but you can't argue this one.
I also noted one of the off-ice officials was named "Dave Keon Junior". There's impartiality for you! I wonder who he had to beat to get that job? Probably Guy Lafleur Junior didn't have much of a chance............
Koivu??? Okay that's three bland games in a row.
He tried hard but got no results. Belfour robbed him twice on one play.
Yikes Higgins...Future habs captain?
I love this guy!
Begin. That guy is awsome. Did you see his blocked shot? Guts
And gonads............
Perez This guy looks terrible IMO.
You're right. He was so good at the start of the year. What the hell hit him?
Ribby...Hmmm Still better than he has been all year but...overall not thrilled with his effort tonight.
I thought he looked pretty good. But now that he thinks he's a scorer, he doesn't seem to pass as much. Still, I liked what I saw.............
Kovalev...HELLO??? another so called big gun who is asleep at the wheel. Not happy with him tonight at all.
What drives me nuts about him is that after "his part" of any play is over - i,e, when he finally loses the puck - he just completely gives up, like he's not even on the ice any more.
Rivet solid again. Could he be that habs best d-man in terms of consistency?
Don't agree on this one. I thought he made a few stupid plays tonight. That first goal was entirely his fault.
Souray looking better and better. I actually like our core of defensmen now.
HIM I liked!
But we do need some offensive help I think. 48 hours Gainey to do your magic...
We need a rest too, especially Huet. I thought he should have been pulled at 5-2. Now they'll pretty much have to start Danis against the B's

Yep. Kovalev is infuriating. Even on the radio, I just KNOW what Kovalev is doing after the play is broken up. It must be so irritating to play on his team.
But...the question is. Is there anyone else on this team you want to have the puck inside the other team's zone when it's time for a goal? He is still the best offensive player on this team when the spirit moves him.
