Wow!...what a pleasant surprise for once. Listen guys, I saw the replay again. Some of you say it wasn't dirty, others say it wasn't "that" dirty (whatever that means). It doesn't matter, the loser, I mean Orpik, got off easy but at least he is paying for his intentional/unintentional act.
P.S. look at the end of the incident, Cole's body - directly facing the boards when he got hit. Orpik could of buffered the hit if he wanted to, when he realized Cole had his numbers facing him.
Have a look at where his feet are (a foot off the ice) as well as his elbows. It may not have been intentional, but at the very least it was extremely careless and a message had to be sent. My preference will be to have Andre Roy send the message the next time these 2 teams play. I think that alot of people are willing to look the other way because it was Eric Cole. Have a long hard look at this picture and pretend for a moment that the white sweater has a number 11 on the back and a CH on the front. Still feeling forgiving?

Thank you Barry. If that was Saks or Huet, we would want his head on a platter. How can you call that a completely clean hit? Are some of you in denial? Ok, he's suspended. It sent out some kind of message but it's not over. I hope Cole comes back at 100%. If and when he does, he's the type of guy who doesn't need someone to fight his battles. I think the next time he meets the Pens, he should circle it on his calendar and write this remark..."this best game I'll ever play". That's payback my friends. Bertuzzi style payback doesn't work.
Let's see, the message here from the NHL would be: the suspension is determined by the calibre of player receiving the hit and the calibre of player being suspended.
As in, Bertuzzi, a Team Canada player intentionally cripples a 3rd or 4th liner and ends his career = 13 games. Orpik, a 3rd or 4th liner lays a questionable hit on a Team USA calibre player = 3 games.
I like a good hit -- stick flying, arms flying, sweater flapping. But I pay attention when my 11-year-old nephew shrugs off playing hockey with, "Too violent."
I actually agree with the Orpik suspension. I saw it and listened to don cherry's, "You kids at home, never turn back..." justification, but at some point Orpik has to decide not to pull up. He didn't and Cole was injured. Orpik's bad. He pays.
But Bertuzzi was wrist-slapped and given a holiday in Torino. I am SO glad he's not on our team -- the same sweater as Fergie?

last im gonna say on this , i hope , picture this , your playing the top team in the league , they are winning big then you come back a bit , its a fast paced game , cole who has scored 2 goals against you tonight , he has the puck , hes riding the boards , you want to blast him into the next week , if you dont , your not playing for your team , you stride toward him you got him lined up , your 2 feet away , your 1 foot away your gonna get him good , oops he turned away . thats what happen here . 3 games well not needed imo. but maybe necessary .

Yeah Exactly...with one skate off the ice and his elbows to the heavens. 3 games not needed???...whatever!
Cole scored 2 goals, what does brain-dead Orpik think of first, to run the player and hurt him enough to hamper him the rest of his night. What a player! A standard all pleyers should follow. If a team is burning you and you want to really win, why not spend that energy by going for the net and actually trying to win the game.
Barry and I got "ZERO" responses when we ask, what if this happened to Koivu or Kovalev or Huet. No one answered because it changes things. Admit it...just a little right.

3 games not needed? How many games did Eric Cole get? I am sick and tired of guys liek Dion Cherry making assinine comments like "You kids out there don't turn your back when you are near the boards". Perhaps he could also provide advice on things like date rape "You girls out there do not where a a short skirt when you go on a date lest the guy rip it off you". Yes a pretty far fetched analogy and comparison, but my point remains the same. We seem to be living in a society of no accountability. Instead of laying the blame where it belongs, Cherry has the audacity to blame it on Cole for turning his back? And yes Key Lime, had the hit been on Koivu and Saks was laying in the hospital wearing a Halo, Mario would need to start another page for responses.

Bang on Barry! For anybody saying this was a marginal hit - LOOK AT THAT PICTURE! Orpik's got both feet off of the ice and elbows way up, Cole's completely turned away and going head-first into a hospital bed.
Not to mention, this was not the first incident in this game with this marginal-at-best player. The Carolina bench warned the refs at least twice before this hit about this guy. 3 games was not enough, in my opinion.
And as much as Cole scares the heck out of me when the 'Canes are playing our boys, I hope he comes back against the Pens at 110% and lights it up. That, I think, is retribution.
I don't think anybody wants to see this crap in any game. Come on Cherry, if that had been Tie Dummy going headfirst into a halo, I wonder if your opinion would be the same.
ok i guess i got to say somemore , limer you say he should channel his energy into trying to score some goals , well thats not his forte , hes an energy type guy , so when montreal goes down a few goals i guess begin should stop hitting and just try to be ribero . as far as the picture goes it can be taken out of context . it is a still of after the fact . he didnt leave his feat to make the hit , he left his feat after the hit maybe to avoid making more contact . as far as it being koivu , well id be upset , but i think i would look at the whole picture , before jumping on the orpiks goon wagon .barry you want accountability , what about coles accountability for turning into the boards trying to avoid the hit in the first place . if i step in front of a bus , i cant blame the bus driver for hitting me . for the sake of argument , can you or someone post the video so we can all look at it again and have a first hand idea of what happened , instead of 4 days later .

Mac, nice try but Bégin tries his best to go for goals when the team needs one and he's scored huge goals for us this season...game winners etc.
I guess what bothers me the most is I find no place for goons in hockey anymore. Grinders and plumbers yes, but not goons. Caro's coaching staff warned the refs twice about Orpik's intentions. Nothing was done and look what happens. Mac, now your saying that Cole did this to himself?
So here is the real deal. Cole is one of my favorite players in the NHL. I've been following since his second year in the league. He's a Montreal killer and I would love him on my team. Who's Orpik? 2 goals and 4 assists all season is who he is. Forget the video replay so we can disect this incident even more. No, Coleis in the hospital now and we're here typing away and critiquing. As far as i'm concern, the benefit of the doubt should always go to the goal scorer and not the goon, when it comes to violent incidents.
Thanks for your opinion Mac but this is all i have to say.
Take a good look at that little kid on the left hand side of Cole, watching this. Maybe he plays Atom Hockey in Pittsburgh. Maybe he looks up to Orpick. Next game maybe he thinks "Gee...I think I will try to run someone through the boards like my hero did. I do not mind missing 3 games". But hey, no worries. With any luck at all, the other kid was watching Don Cherry and will remember not to be so stupid as to turn his back on an 8 year old.

Look at his right leg and ankle...
Don Cherry! It's funny how Don Cheery comments about goons when he's the most celebrated pro-goon in hockey...and how do we have a guy on TV always saying "you kids out there" this and "you kids out there" that when he filled his pockets with his Rock Em' Sock Em' and Break Their Neck Em'! Videos! ...and we call him an Icon. I like him because he shoots from the hip but I definately don't agree with half of what he yacks.
It's a little cumbersome, but click on the link, then click on "Highlights:CAR-PIT". The hit is around the half way point. There is no way you can convince me that Cole getting injured is entirely Orpik's fault. I'm willing to concede that he was going after Cole with some extra zeal, but Cole turned to go back up ice, and Orpik rode him into the boards. The only reason that this hit is turning into a big deal, is because of the severity of the injury. The hit occured on Saturday night, and the first mention of this "attrocity" on this board was Sunday after it was announced that he had a broken neck.

yes begin tries for goals but i believe hes bee ejected from 2 games this years for head checks or whatevery you want to call them , im not saying cole is completely at fault but look at heets video its not all orpiks fault either . like i said earlier if i step in front of a bus i cant blame the driver for hitting me , cole tried to avoid a hit and ended up taking a worse hit as a consequence , its realy nobodys fault it just happened .

Thanks again Mac...but like I said, my last post was the last I had to say. There's a break point in every debate. I just don't agree with you. I respect your views. Rock on!

Wow...you should be the lawyer working for Cole. You got some skills.

Never mind Cole, I'd hire him as a consultant any day. He makes great arguements.
