We were just talking about John Chabot. I read two things about him in today's local paper:
(1) He is of Algonquin heritage and is currently running some native counselling program.
(2) He was just named coach of the Acadie-Bathurst Titan in the QMJHL. How long until Doug MacLean gobbles his up as an assistant in Columbus, I wonder? Seems like half of Summerside is over there!
Still don't know if there's Acadian blood in him, however...............

Well if he's part-native he's probably got Acadian blood. At least that's the case in PEI. Especially in the Summerside area. Almost all natives in PEI are catholic and there was a lot of intermarriage before the English came in.

That seems to be less the case in NS and NB, although there was definitely some intermarriage between the natives & Acadians as well. Certain families - Blanchard, Doucet, etc., - definitely have native bloodlines.
Chabot was an inspiration to Chad Denny, a young native playing for Lewiston in the QMJHL. He is a sure-fire NHL'er, in my books.

John Chabot although born in Summerside,PEI and probably born at the old army base as his parents were in the armed forces. His father is Indian and mother French Canadian. He is really from Maniwaki Algonquin Reserve 160 kilometers north of Ottawa. His real last name is Kaibaiche and when Chabot went south to play junior hockey for the Hull Olympics - his father decided to give him an easier name and Chabot sounded close to Kaibaiche and looked ok and so he became John Chabot......

So much for my Acadian theory. Well, there you have it. How'd you find this out?
Plouf...... I collect and still am collecting Montreal Canadiens Media Guides - I have from 1979/1980 to this year (I get the older ones off Ebay if the price is ok as well as at The Hockey Card Show held in Toronto twice a year) anyways way back when in the early 80's when Chabot was a rookie with the Habs there was a small article in the newspaper on his name change (which I thought was interesting) and I clipped it out and put it with his first profile in a Habs media guide and so when his name came up - I just referred to the guide...........
