I was just wondering if anyone else noticed that when watching some games this entire week that there are alot of empty seats at alot of the empty rinks. Is the new NHL still on Olympic break.

And one other thing, i've heard a number of people on this site mention how CBC and TSN are pro- Toronto,  well i have to say I totally agree.  While I'm watching the Sens and Pens, in between periods there main topic is that Domi is playing in his 1000th game later in the week.  Yes it is an amazing accomplishment, but weren't the Pens and Sens playing

You know I am sick of you guys saying stuff like that. I have been readin this site for a while and noticed that you hab fans are exactly like leaf fans here in Toronto. First off TSN is situated out of Toronto so yes they will cover a litte more Leafs coverage. Know if I was French native living in Calagary would RDS cover the Flames in depth like they do the Canadiesn??? I highly doubt it. Look at all the facts before you post them.

As for CBC Bob Cole and Harry Neale yes they are really pro leafs but RDS or who ever does the habs saturday night game is pro habs. It only makes sense. If you say CBC should be a national broadcast and should not have favourtism then so should RDS because they are the French national broadcast !!!!

Back to TSN Pierre McGuire and so on are not biased, the commetators Harry Neale and Joe Bowen, yes they are but that is their job to be. As for talking about Domi , everybody makes a big deal about 1000 games, they would have talked about if it was Darren McCarty.

Next, I watched the game last night and they barely talked about Domi, they talked about Lafontaine who's number was retired and they even let him on the air for like 5 minutes, talking about his carrer while the game was on.

I just think they are alot of people on here that jump to conclusions and don't look at the whole picture. Alot of you sound like annoying Leaf fans that I have to deal with living in Toronto. The main reason why I hate the Leafs. I think if I lived in Montreal and had to deal with their annoying fans I would hate them too.

1 thing there andy , rds is a french broadcast , the main population of french in this country is in quebec with new brunswick , the cbc is an english broadcast i believe there are english viewers in all provinces . rds is catering to 95% of its audiance where as cbc would be more like 25%, if that .

Het Andy, I understand your frustration but if you want to last on this board get used to posters giving their OPINIONS. It's the way they feel, man. Don't get upset, there's no need to. Good post though...

Thing is Andy, there are a lot of English-speaking Habs fans, whereas I doubt you could find a dozen Francophone Leafs fans. So since your rationale is something like "they're just catering to their natural audience" or something, well I disagree. In the Maritimes there are almost as many Habs fans as Leafs fans and we get subjected to pretty much all Toronto on English CBC.

Anyway, the reason everybody complains is also that back in the day (when many of us started watching the Habs) you used to get a lot of Habs games on HNIC in English. (the Dick Irvin era)...at some point everything changed and it became pretty much all Leafs.

Of course the big advantage is that even those who don't speak French can understand hockey French at least now.

Thanks and I am leaving my opinion. Trust me I don't like it also that the Habs are not in english, but I have the NHL centre Ice so I can follow them. The one thing that I did notice is that CBC has their own telecast for Ottawa in English. I don't think the problem is CBC I think the problem is RDS purchasing the rights to the broadcast. Which is why it is always in French. Vancouver, Calagary and Edmonton get their games broadcasted in local CBC as well. It just so happens that the local for the Habs is RDS.

As for the Maritime provinces, since the majority is english speaking that is why they broadcast the Leafs game in English. As to why they pick the Leafs over Ottawa , but I do beleive the National broadcast will change over to Ottawa if the Leafs continue their down fall next season.

I am just looking at this from a non-biased position, not a complainer as to why the habs are not on CBC. I did not mean to offend anyone just wanted to state my opinion. And by the way I am a die hard Habs fan, who watches the majority of the games from the other teams broadcast. I kinda like it at times because you don't get brian washed by your own teams commentators and you could comment on the game as you seen it.

Although , if there was one broadcaster that is worse then Bob Cole and Harry Neale watch a game on NESN when the habs are playing it Boston, it actually gets really funny at times.

Andy, the CBC is a publicly funded station, meaning that all of Canada pays for the programming. Since we as taxpayers are paying for the likes of Cole and Neal, it is important to get unbiased commentary from them. RDS and TSN are not publicly funded and therefore can favour whoever they like.

You know, I only have time to respond to two things you ssaid

1. TSN is a national network, it would be like ESPN having a pro Boston bias because they are in Connecticut

2. Watch a Habs-Leafs game sometime. Tell me if it's OK with you that Cole is such a Leafs fan then

Read my posts , when did I say the Bob Cole and Harry Neale were not biased ??? I think you are reading in a different sections because your comments don't make sense.

My other point, CBC is publically funded then blame them for letting RDS take the HABS away ( was there not a contract that went to RDS instead of CBC a couple of years ago? RDS took your hopes away ? )

Next why does CBC have a Ottawa telecast and Leafs telecast at the same time ??? Do the people in Ottawa get upset I don't think so , they are just happy that they can watch it on t.v.

Oh and when has TSN been biased against the habs ????? I was impressed last night with all Lafontaine coverage that they gave. Even the leafs were playing Buffalo, makes no sense since you guys say they only cover leafs.

Correct me if I am wrong isn't RDS the sister station of TSN, RDS is supposed to repsent all French speaking Canadiens across the board. Then why do they only cover the habs. I am in toronto and I can catch RDS.

Yeah I am. But does being a Habs mean complaining about Bob Cole and Harry Neale ???? I am a huge Habs fan, but I just suck it up and bought NHL Centre Ice to watch the habs in English. What does it matter eventually all hockey will be pay perview besides saturday night. Toronto is slowly going that way with Leafs T.V, I heard Calagary and Vancouver have alot of Pay perview games but I may not be correct on that.

If being a Habs fan means you must complain about CBC that makes no sense. I enjoy the game not the politics like commentators and our gouvernment not showing the Habs on National T.V. Who cares??? Just spend the money and NHL Centre Ice.  So tell me are you a even Habs fan, do you catch every game ??? I pay to catch all of them

Back in the days of Spinny Spencer when he played for the Laffs, I think 69-70, his father, from BC was looking forward to watching his son play on Hockey night in Canada, CBC. Back then, the Laffs were being broadcast in every province except for BC. They were showing a different game.

Mr. Spencer was so angry, he cleaned his rifle then headed to the closest CBC office of Prince George, BC. He was drinking all evening and still very angry. He walked in the back door and strongly made his point with rifle in hand, that the Laffs should be shown accross Canada including BC. The manager agreed(Like he had a choice) but also at the time someone slipped out and called the police. When Mr. Spencer staggered back out to his truck, the police were waiting and seen him come out with rifle in hand. They didn't give him a chance to drop his weapon and proceeded to open fire. They killed him!

They have angered many fans over the years and now have high security at their broadcast stations because of it. They will continue to anger tax payers forever! I don't think they're too worried who they offend. If they cared, they certainly wouldn't have the controversial Don Cherry speaking his mouth off.

What the hell are you talking about boy?

I think your problem is more that you don't like french people than anything else. Atleast that is what I am gathering from your posts.

If you were to listen to RDS they do cover more than just hab games. And infact are very critical of the Canadiens.

Go on to their website and under "hockey" they have a section for the habs, and a section for the sens.

Go to their programming:
March 8th: Pittsburg vs Washington
March 12th: Philly vs Pittsburg
March 18th: Toronto vs Pittsburg
March 24th: Sens vs Sabres

Shall I continue?

I have no problem with French people. But if you go tsn websites they have the seem things your talking about.

All I am saying is a couple of years ago RDS stole the Habs contract away from CBC. They paid more money for HNIC. So this could be a reason why CBC does not hold Habs games.

Does anyone recall this ??? It used to be CBC french that called the games, now they just pick up the RDS feed and broadcast on their station.

Well Jay, this what Tsn shows :

Tuesday, Mar. 7
Montreal @ Toronto HDTV
7:30pm
4:30pm

Wednesday, Mar. 8
Pittsburgh @ Washington
7pm
4pm

Thursday, Mar. 9
Montreal @ Boston HDTV
7pm
4pm

Wednesday, Mar. 15
Anaheim @ Detroit
7:30pm
4:30pm

Wednesday, Mar. 22
Philadelphia @ NY Rangers
7pm
4pm

Thursday, Mar. 23
Toronto @ Montreal HDTV
7:30pm
4:30pm

Sunday, Mar. 26
Toronto @ New Jersey HDTV
7:30pm
4:30pm

Tsn just list it as total programming, they don't have a special Leafs section. So thanks for helping to prove my point.  Yes please continue.

All I am saying is that RDS bought the rights over CBC for the Habs, so we can't really complain. In the end it was the Montreal Canadiens who sold their t.v rights to RDS so in the end, it would of cost CBC more of our tax money. I think I am pretty clear.

My argument wasn't about TSN. Cause they do have other teams. However you were saying that RDS is a habs bias station

Actually Andy, I think you are correct. RDS did purchase the rights...thus the CBC would need to "pay" to broadcast. Am I correct? If this is the case, then us "english" speaking hab fans can blame RDS for missing our traditional HNIC Saturday nights that we grew up with.

Although I really like hearing the games in french anyway( I subscribe to RDS). Something about those guys rambling on about "fillets" and "buts"...

Not the case though. We pretty much lost the public broadcasts of the Habs in English way before RDS even existed.

As for your comments on the Maritimes, Andy please explain to me why the publicly -funded CBC should broadcast Toronto games because the majority of fans are English-speaking. Being a Habs fan is not only about speaking French. It's arguable that when the Nordiques still existed that the Habs were the bilingual team, where the Nordiques were the "pure laine" team. There are quite a few non-Toronto English-speaking fans in the Maritimes.

As for the comments suggesting we suck it up because everything will soon be pay-per-view. The pervasive attitude that we should all just suck it up and conform is more or less why pay-per-view (or any other scheme imposed on us) will in fact take over. I prefer thinking for myself and complaining about what I don't like, rather than "sucking it up", thank you very much.

True they did stop broadcasting the games before RDS took over, but I do remember that many times Hab games and Leaf games would have different start times, and CBC would cut to the Habs once the Leafs are done. That does not happen anymore because RDS bought the rights. Know you are arguing that they did not broadcast the games before RDS bought the rights, that is the past. Currently CBC does not have the right to broadcast the game because of RDS. However it looks the playoffs can still be covered through CBC as all the hab games were televised by CBC in 2004.

It doesn't matter since CBC is publicly funded, whether they show Leafs vs Sens, or Van vs Calgary, etc... they need to be fair across the board. No biased commentary... My money is paying their salaries...

I understand what you are saying. However in the world of business, The MONTREAL CANADIENS sold the t.v rights to RDS. So a pubilic funded company still has to purchase the rights to them, and RDS purchased them. It doesn't matter if your money is going to them they don't have the rights to the habs.

On second note, I am pretty sure when CBC hosts it's national news coverage it does not cover just the Toronto area, I am pretty sure they talk about big Montreal news. So on that side of it your money is still going to Montreal news and the rest of Canada.

Well in the playoffs lets watch and see if there is biased commentary on CBC.

First, welcome Andy.

Second, a warning for hijacking ray's thread. Topic here was I was just wondering if anyone else noticed that when watching some games this entire week that there are alot of empty seats at alot of the empty rinks. Is the new NHL still on Olympic break. n I noticed that tonight against Tampa. Maybe is was because we were beating them and it was mid third, but in Montreal, you stay until the clock says 00:00.

Finally, a warning on personal attacks. There were a couple borderline from a few guys. Please be charitable. I think it is awesome that this board is growing more populous but we have to be nice to each other.

It's been Bob and Harry for years (Neale I believe has other commitments on Leaf TV) but I'll take those two over the other western CBC broadcast especially with Greg Millen who never shuts up and is always supporting the goalies' union at least CBC got rid of Glen Healy another one who loves the sound of his voice. I like Jim Hughson but I wish they would get him another analysist in the booth but I do not know who.........not Pierre Maguire (LOL)

Wow Andy I didn't think my comments would get such a standing ovation.  Anyways you brought up alot a good points and some that I may not of known.  But anyways, it justs sucks that the Habs are only on CBC when they play the Leafs or they're on the West Coast but rarely happens.  I pay $8 a month extra on my cable bill to get every  hab game which i don't mind doing but 7 other channels come with it that I will never watch.  I noticed last night CBC finally added a couple Ottawa games to its national audience, which is great but why not Montreal, they're on a roll and in a playoff spot, even let Bob and Harry do the game.

I've see every game this year be it on CBC, TSN , Live or RDS but i have to disagree with your comments on the RDS broadcasters being biased.  I've had numerous people comment that they didn't know who scored the goal because the broadcaster sounds the same whether it be a Hab goal or an opposition.  Also, when a guy ( hab) is struggling or down right playing awful they tell it like it is. They don't sugar coat it.

Oh yeah, how about those empty seats, lol

I actually don't mind Bob Cole and Harry Neale all THAT much. They're very pro-Toronto, but they know their hockey, more or less. Could be a lot worse (see NESN - Bruins). Same goes for Don Cherry. He may be pro-Leaf, pro-Bruin, whatever, and he may be an all-around jerk. But he does actually know the game more than most. Same goes for John Davidson down here. He's pretty good.

If you compare these guys to Hrudey, Millen, Healy, etc...they start to seem pretty ok.

My favourite announcer right now is Murray Wilson (I've been doing the CJAD thing a lot lately) and I wish he got a chance on TV. I like his deadpan style.

What I'd like to see worked out in the future is already in the works. A HNIC broadcast where you can select which broadcast you'd like to see. They have this on Bell Expressview I believe, where all the feeds are placed there and you pick which one. Now if only CBC could get the rights to a habs broadcast every saturday, all would be good. With the execption that people would need cable/satalite to watch it. But it should still be offered free with these services.
