Kovy the puck hog
Permalink Closed

I paid close attention to kovy last night to confirm what many have stated especially Barry about him being a puck hog.

Last night Ribs would pass him the puck and he would hog it until Perez was in the open or he would lose it. On a couple occasions Ribs was behind the net or on the half boards without coverage and Kovy wouldn't pass to him. On one paticular occasion, Ribs was in the slot with his stick cocked back with Kovy 10 feet from him with double coverage. Rather than pass it off while his linemate was in a scoring position, Kovy skated out of the slot and proceeded to lose the puck. I just think if he passed it off sooner or played more give and go, he would have way more goals because he could position himself better. His keep away strategy is getting boring.

I know Ribs isn't the ultimate linemate but when he is open, he can do good things with the puck like waiting for the charging D-man or even a long pass across the slot.

It's easy to pounce on Ribs but if he never gets the puck back than his stronger aspects like vision and passing will never be noticed. He can't shoot like Kovy but he can pass it to him in scoring areas.

I'm just saying that Kovy needs to utilize all 4 teamates rather than the keepaway bit. If he flys through the nuetral zone and beats a few players than great but than when he gets across the blue line, he eats the puck along the half boards until it's too late to pass it off. Sometimes he gets away with it but more often than not he doesn't.

Maybe he has no confidence that anyone else on the ice is good enough to carry it or that he won't get it back to be the set up man? I just don't know why he's adopted this style.

I'm rambling on but does anyone else have anything to add?

Im just glad at how well Ryder and Higgins are playing with Koivu. Higgins has been playing really well of late, and since Ryder and Koivu were together, Ryders found his hands again. ...Sadly...Kovalev isnt doing much on the second line. He DID have an assist last night though! What a bullet shot that was!!

For the record, he assisted on the first two hab goals.

Actually Kovy's puck hogging was, in a weird way, what brought about the first goal. When you can stickhandle like that sometimes it screws up the defense and gets someone free. Not to say he isn't a puck hog, but sometimes it's a good thing.
