Canadian Beckie Scott and Montreal Canadiens captain Saku Koivu were chosen to represent athletes on the International Olympic Committee Thursday.

Scott of Vermilion, Alta., and Koivu were selected from a pool of 15 athletes to be on the Athletes' Commission, a committee that meets annually and works as a link between athletes and the IOC.

Koivu is playing with Finland's hockey team that will play in one of Friday's semifinal games against Russia.

"I'm absolutely flattered to have been voted by my peers to represent them in this prestigious role," Scott said in a release. "I look forward to working for all of the athletes, and doing my best for them."

Scott and Koivu will replace former NHL and Finnish hockey star Jari Kurri and Norwegian speed skater Adne Sondral on the 19-member committee.

In addition to their responsibilities with the commission, Scott and Koivu will also have full IOC membership status during their eight-year terms. Montreal's Dick Pound, head of the World Anti-Doping Agency, is the only other Canadian IOC member.

Scott, a cross-country skier, eventually was awarded a gold medal from the 2002 Olympics after a pair of Russians finished ahead of her but failed drug tests. Scott has been vocal about the dangers of doping and is part of WADA's Athlete Committee.

Scott, 31, also won a silver at the Torino Olympics with compatriot Sarah Renner in the women's team sprint.

"Beckie will now be able to participate in influential discussions leading up to the Olympic Games in Beijing, Vancouver and London while providing an important voice for Canada's athletes," said Chris Farstad, who works in athlete relations for the Canadian Olympic Committee.

Scott becomes the third Canadian to sit on the commission. Five-time Olympian Charmaine Crooks of Vancouver served from 1996 to 2004 while Calgary's Ken Read was a member from 1985 to 1998.

Polling stations were set up at each of the three Olympic villages in Turin, Italy, and more than 78 per cent of athletes voted.
