Inside the Dressing Room
Permalink Closed

As many of you know, I am a close friend of Claude Juliens..now the richest unemployed coach in the NHL lol. Because of this I was privy to many of the goings on in the inner sanctum of the Habs. What goes on in the dressing room, likes/dislikes, etc....most of which I will not repeat ever because CJ needs to make a living in the NHL again one day. However, when I talk about how spoiled players are today, let me give you some examples. I will not give you the name of each player to protect the names of the innocent..or guilty. Besides, I expect you guys will have alot more fun trying to guess who is who

  1. One player refuses to allow the team trainer to sharpen his skates. He makes the trainer drive all the way across the city to Laval to a place he likes there.
  2. Another player will not drink the Pepsi they have in the dressing room and makes the team buy him Coke (not Ribs and THAT kind of coke)
  3. One player requires the trainers to have 6 pairs of DRY gloves ready for him every game. As soon as a pair gets damp the trainer needs to go get him a dry pair
  4. Another player demands that he have a clean jersey to put on before every period
  5. One player demands his own hotel room on the road and will not bunk with anyone (it is customary that you have roomates).
  6. Michael Ryder is a HUGE practical joker. One time he put ketchup packages under the toilet seat when he knew that Begin was going in to do his business. Begin ended up with ketchup all over his suit pants. Another time he put scotch tape on the bottom of Markov's skates and Markov could not stand up on the ice
  7. One player refuses to sign more than 6 autographs at a time. This same player skipped out on the visit to the sick kids hospital
  8. Another player uses a different stick every day whether he needs it or not. He goes through over 90 sticks a year...(note..mine last 2 years)
  9. At the team Xmas party...certain players were not invited.
  10. Some players do not treat the trainers very well, throwing their dirty laundry on the floor rather than putting it into the hamper for the trainers, asking the trainers to do mundane tasks for them such as going to get them a coffee

Ok stop Barry...it's making me sick. I'm sure that players on Habs Stanley cup winning teams of the past had exactly the same request. Prima-Donna's or are thet just victims of how society bends over backwards for celebrities and pro athletes?

Well I do not think this attitude is Habs specific..I think most teams have players like this..sad but true. How soon these guys forget that a few short years ago they go up at 5 am to go to a rink, carryin their own gear. Making a stick last a whole year because Dad could only afford one...short memories indeed

I just spent an hour this afternoon skating around and shooting pucks on an outdoor "rink" (a frozen-over tennis court), which I had to clear of snow first.  And I had a great time doing it!  These overpriced primadonnas do make one sick, when you consider (1) the money they make and (2) the life of comfort they lead.

I'm just glad you didn't name names, Barry; I don't want to know.

Hey my Dad played hockey with a pice of frozen manure and sears catalogues for shin pads..I asked him what happened to the puck when it got above freezing

I bet And-o can bat at least .500 on this one (I think you are basically looking for a total of 8 names), although I certainly can't attribute a specific name to a specific number on the list!

In no particular order...Kovalev, Koivu, Zednik, Theodore.

Did And-o nail it???

I'm pretty sure the gloves is Markov i noticed the trainers bringing him gloves every once in awhile when i sat beside the bench in Buffalo. I could be wrong.

and ketchup on the toilet seet. Priceless. Doug Gilmour was also a huge practical joker.

When i see the Canadiens (Waiting outside the hotel) none of them have ever turned down an autograph except Kovalev, but im pretty sure Kovy went to the hospital.

The one that is most telling for me is number 9 (isn't that a song? lol).  To not be invited to the Xmas party... that is rough.  Even worse is what they must be doing to be rejected like that.

I was going to say Kovalev until someone posted that he went( how do they know I wonder??). So my next pick is Ribs. And if not him..Dags...and if not him...Zednik.

lol, I know, but he wasn't there for the Children's hospital, so I figured it would be him, and you'd be surprized at how everyone has alot of autograph requests. I remember when Donald Brashear was on the Habs team. And he was swamped with people asking him for autographs

I mean I knew these guys were spoiled primadonnas, but !!!!!

Random guesses:
Zednik is the guy who insists on bunking alone.
(my second guess would be either Ribeiro or Theo)

Guys who abuse the trainers: What a bunch of @#$!s. Maybe I'm naive, but do HOCKEY players do that?

Pepsi-Coke? Too many hard checks to the head. Dandenault?

Dry gloves: Weird, superstitious-sounding thing.
Same goes for the jerseys. It's ridiculous, but sounds like that kind of thing.
The skates one too, but it's a little too much though.
Could that be Theo? He definitely seemed like he needed some help with those skates the way he slipped onto his knees slid across the crease. Or could it be Souray? Maybe his skates were so sharp that's why he couldn't move left-right when guys were barreling down on him.

Hard to believe, eh what?

As for jerseys, that could be any one of them - wihtout have to put a fresh one on.  There have been plenty of nights when they didn't break a sweat.

Ummm... I hope that 'loser' comment was for the player.  I agree, the most 'Grotesque' is not going to the Hospital.  Just to clarify, my comment was to say that the most telling thing that there is a problem in the dressing room is that some players were not invited to the Xmas party, as that must have been a group decision to ostracize another group.  I wonder if management has any say in these things and if any punishments were handed down for a few of the things on that list.

The one about Ryder putting scOtch tape on Markovs skate blades is pretty funny, you gotta admit.

I had it happen to me once.  I was one of the better skilled kids on my house league team (the man who wears glasses in the land of the blind) and it was going to my head.  In fact, in hindsight, I was one of the kids that you would pull your kid out, just so they wouldn't be forced to play on my team (live and learn).  The coaches decided to "check" my skates before a game.  It took about ten minutes of my teammates and coaches having a good laugh at me trying to stand on the ice before they came over and "rechecked" my skates.  It was explained to me that I was getting pretty full of myself, so the coaches decided to bring me down a notch.  I don't remember if I learned my lesson then or not, but I was able to keep my big mouth shut for the rest of the year.

I remember when I was on a rep team when I was a kid, we were in Ottawa for a tournament and one of the coaches assistants smeared Vicks Vapor Rup on the inside two of the guys cups before practice. WUAHHHHH!!
