This is really interesting now. I fully see no reason why Gainey can't go out and make a blockbuster trade of some sort. As far as I'm concerned, if he does nothing before the deadline, he isn't doing his job.
...it immediately frees-up enough $$$ for a real high quality rent-a-player!
And-O, that would be fine if Theo broke his skull and was out for the remainder of his contract. Fact is they say 6-8 weeks. Then his salary counts againts the cap again..what do you do then? You now have your high pai drent a player, say at 2.5 million (the remainder of a 5 mill contract) and then Theo's overinflated 5 mill goes on the caproll again. The relief from Theo's strain on the cap is temporary at best.

Temporary. Yep, no help in the long term. But for this season at least it reduces our total cap amount probably by around 1/2 a million, so it makes a "rent-a-player" totally possible. It could even be a very high-end rent-a-player.
I say, #$@ the rent-a-goalie. Stick with Huet and Danis and get a rent-a-real-defenseman.
