Remembering Rick "Gump" Wamsley-A Hab Fans Moment

In his early NHL years, Wamsley was tutored by the great Jacques Plante and for a short time could count himself among the better goalies in the game.


He started in Montreal in 1980, not a good place to start because the team was just coming off four straight Stanley Cups and were expecting whoever played in goal to replace Ken Dryden save for save and win for win.


In four years, Wamsley had a great record of 72-36-16 but he was traded to St.Louis in 1984 and that was that. He had some good years with the Blues, but the team wasn't as strong and he was shipped off to Calgary with Rob Ramage in the deal that saw the Blues get Brett Hull and Steve Bozek.


A short time later Wamsley was involved in an even bigger deal, 10 players switching teams between the Leafs and the Flames, and he ended his career in Toronto.


He stayed on with the Toronto Maple Leafs as a goalie coach, and later went to Columbus as a consultant as well as coach.


Wamsley also worked with a Toronto based company that made goalie masks.

I don't remember Wamsley being nicknamed "Gump" (Lorne Worsley was, of course).


Where do you get these snippets, Jean?  They seem to be written in a different style from yours, so I assume they're cut & pasted from somewhere?

I look stuff up in a burage of different books I have on the game and in some cases I plaster a whack of em' together so that the stories don't get to lengthy.  I apologize if they do.


I hope you don't mind the players profiles. I thought they'd be fun for some who don't know of the names or fun to read for those of us who wish to remember.

Rick was also known as "Wammer". I'm not sure who gave him the famous Worsley sig, but it was one of his nicknames as far as my research went.


I bet they didn't go as far as to call him "Gumper"

How about Charlie Hodge-Roggie Vachon-Phil Myre-Tony Esposito-Ken Dryden for other Stanley Cup goalies to remember........
