Is "Running up the score" really such a big deal?
Permalink Closed

Lately everyone is blasting the Canadian women's hockey team for "running up the score" against their opponents. And, eventhough the Olympics is a special scenerio where the event can be removed from the games... If you are strong enough to "run up the score" then congrats. I think it's just as insulting to the other teams to have them play keepaway the rest of the game too. By the other team not holding back, it just shows the people on the losing end what they need to improve on.

Please, by all means, let me know what you think.

in general it is a bad thing , but in this case when anything is decided by goal differential it is a necessary evil

I got into it with a guy at work about this.

I say, run 'er up. - It's not Timbits hockey, it's for an Olympic medal. ...and I AM NOT INTERESETD IN THE "SHOWCASING" OF WOMENS HOCKEY IN THE WORLD MARKETPLACE.

So there, my opinion.

That's my exact feeling on this as well, macneil.

In a meaningless game, you should not embarass anyone - it's not only not nice, it could come back and bite you in the a$$ the next time you play that same team, who would have extra motivation.

Besides, what does a better goal differential get a team.  Last line change before a faceoff.    Sorry, but I don't think that is that big of a deal in the olympics.  In a regular game, sure, as most teams will have fringe players.  In the Olympics, your team is supposed to be the best of the best, therefore no 4th line.

This is a tournament and you are there to show you are the best. If they want to score 40 goals, then do it. If they are really concerned they should implement a "10-run rule" like in softball. Otherwose, you have 60 minutes to play, so play. You can't float for 50 minutes. You have to take it all seriously. Otherwise you get to the last game without rythm. It's ok if you play your rookies more or try new plays etc but you are there to display that you are the best. But I think it more of an embarrassment if you score 4-5 goals in 10 minutes then play keep away.

Well the Olympics is the biggest stage for women's hockey, so why not flex the muscle if you got it.  I agree that it is insulting to your opposition to "take it easy".

I find it terribly ironic that the Americans, of all people. woul dcry about poor sportsnamship. If you recall, it was the USA who demanded that their NBA millionaires be allowed to play in the summer Olympics which opened the floodgates for the NHL. I did not hear one USA player apologizing when the "Dream Team" was beating teams like France 142-41.The Canadian women did exactly what they had to do..as opposed to the USA who were the one crying that Canada ran up the score. Hockey is a game of momentum and the Canadians are trying to build for the gold medal game.  You need to work on your power play, penalty kill and, above all, ensure that you do not develop bad habits that will carry over into a big game against decent competition. If you do not have the team to be at the Olympics, don't go, simple as that. The Americans coasted through teh round robin, almost lost to Finland and then lost to Sweden today because they were not going full throttle. The result? Canada will win a Gold Medal, teh Americans get to play for the poopy colored compact disk thingy. But hey, the main thing is, they did not run up the score and were good sports

So if they are so concerned, why didn't the US run up the score against Sweden?
