Inventory of Tradebait...
Permalink Closed

And-o thinks that most Hab fans believe the following names are most likely/probable tradebait leading up to March 9th; Zednik, Ribeiro, Sundstrum, Bonk and perhaps a goaltender (lord knows which one).

However, in addition to this list, And-o would like to put forward the very strong possibility that Gainey might consider moving our upcoming 1st round selection…especially since this is supposed to be a shallow draft pool!

The question then becomes…what realistic returns could Gainey harvest for any combination of these assets???

Surely he will be able to land at least a serviceable defenseman, another useful gritty forward and perhaps even a solid prospect or two?!?!?  Reasonable???

Anything more than that would be gravy in And-o’s opinion.

…And-o would be very surprised at this point though if Gainey traded from beyond the above names and brought in a BIG name…unless, of course, Theo is the goaltender being moved!!!

Out of those, I think Zednik is the most likely to go. He might be regenerated elsewhere, and the team has several guys coming up with similar skill (Kostitsyn, Perezhogin) on the wing, although Zednik's strength on his skates is a rare commodity.

A way of getting a top-line defenseman:

trade Zednik, the first-round pick, and one of our current  veteran defensemen (my guess would be Dandenault or Souray) for a high-level defenseman.

I think Theo is here to stay, as is Bonk.  Gainey seems to be making a real effort to turn Theo around and I think he would have dealt him already if he was going to.  Bonk is making too much for a 4th liner and that seems to be his role in today's NHL.  Sundstrom makes a good insurance guy so I would think it is 50-50 that he goes.  Zednik might be decent trade bait, but he seems to perform well in the play-offs, so if we are in contention for a spot, then he will probably stay.  I could see Ribs being moved foir a D-man to a team that needs offense.  I can also see the Habs moving a prospect to make another Kovalev move.  Chicago looks likely, but don't rule out Gainey going after Arnott who is a free-agent this summer.  Although Dallas will not be a seller, Gainey may offer enough to get him, as he is the big, right-hander that Gainey has been looking for.

Why not?! Are there any stories?

The guy is big, strong, and talented -- not to mention that he plays hard.

Exactly.  He would ruin the chemistry.

I agree of not trading Zeddy! I've been critical of him this season but he had a very strong last game and he could be a huge force in the playoffs( if we get there). I think we should keep him now and concentrate on moving Ribs and Theo!

I think that the reality is that no one wants either Ribs or Theodore, understandably (you usually trade to make your team BETTER).  If we want a quality player, we are going to have to move a quality player in return and unfortunately Zeddy is right at the top of the list.  I really like the guy, but he's not producing enough and there has been interest in him from other teams.  Has he ever been a huge force at any time?
