CJ About to Sign With Junior Team

Do not be surpised that Claude Julien will sign a deal to coach a Major Junior team this week but only until the end of this season.

Good for him! Wish him the best from the GOHABS guys and gals...

Aside question for you - does this mean the Habs don't have to pay him anymore?

ActuallY i am not sure John..the one thing that is holding up the announcement is his contract with Montreal which is being worked on today. I suspect that they just buy him out for a mutually agreed upon figure.

Makes sense to me... Good for CJ. Now he can really come visit the board since he won't have any ties to the organization other than being a fan.

Guys...it's not a divorce!  CJ signed a contract...he will get his money...or he really needs to spend more than 50 cents on his next lawyer and agent!!!

Andy, I think he was fired as coach but is being paid as being part of the organization. Once he cuts ties he doesn't get paid by the Habs anymore.

Hey JohnM...MAYBE CJ is still getting payed...And-o thinks so!!!

From HockeyRodent...

These days, head coaches negotiate guaranteed contracts. The coach gets paid regardless of whether he's fired or not.

The team will agree to the currency commitment when structured a certain way:

The coach continues to be paid in monthly installments during the guaranteed term of the agreement.

Thus, if John Smith joins the Muskegon Mice by signing a guaranteed contract for three seasons, it means that he is paid the full amount whether he coaches or not. But it is paid out as salary over the term of the contract.

Teams do this primarily for monetary reasons. But it also allows them to "fire" the coach before the contract expires without risking his defection to a competitor.

When a head coach, such as Ken Hitchcock is "fired", he's really not fired. He is merely relieved of his head coach duties. But he remains an employee of the Stars until his guaranteed contract expires.

I am really gonna be pissed if he signs because we were supposed to be in Myrtle Beach on the 24th for 3 days of golf

Agreed but it doesn't say what happens if the ex-coach goes and works for someone else. Here I think Barry is right and the two sides would work out a deal to shred the contract.

Then again, who really cares. Not my $.

Probably discount the value of the new contract from that which remains under the old one.

Barry -- I was golfing in South Beach/Miami/Key Biscane last week. I got bit by the bug so bad that I went out in -9 this past weekend to hit balls at the range (the heater didn't do that much).

That's fantastic.  Which junior league in Canada?

Actually he turned down the job last night. He thought he was going to take it but felt that it was not the right situation. It was with the Bathurst Titans here in NB which would have been great for me (where I work). But they wanted him long term and he was only willing to finish out this season with them. His goal remains to get back to the NHL and since he is still making 700,000 a year iwth Montreal, I guess he can afford to pick and choose.

Wow!  That would have been a great boost for the Titan and the Bathurst area - and for you, Barry!.  But I guess he had 700,000 reasons to turn it down.  Will that become public knowledge, I wonder?  Who's coaching them now?

It will be public knowledge today...but Bathurst fired their coach on the weekend and the GM is now coaching on an interim basis.
