To many Euro's
Permalink Closed

What do you think Lass's and Lassie's? We have to many europeans on the Canadie'n. Don't get me wrong there great players. We need more canadian content on the team. Our first line consists of all Euro's. Our best D man is european. Remember in 93 we didn't have any. Most of our prospects consist of europe. They play when they want and are not consistent. Look at Jan Bulis great player, great shot, great speed but disappears. We need more heart and soul players. Love that pictures of the tin men and pylons. We all know when the Finns, czechs, slovaks, russia, swedes show up. When they play for there country. I,m not prejudice at all but i wish they would have heart and soul and earn there millions. Isn't funny that we don,t have any team Canada players but Saku, Kovalev, Markov, Zednik, Bulis, Streit who should'nt even be on the Habs. Huet deserves to be on his team France. They are all on there olympic teams. I guess I'm just frustrated and looking for excuses. But we need to be the Montreal Canadiens not the Montreal Europeans. Habs gotta win tomorrow.

Where's the response on this one. Thought it would be a hot topic.

I usually see everyones point on alot of different topics, but i soooo disagree with this.  Were Europeans saying this about us when the lockout was in place, all of our players going over there to play....its a different world this day and age, its not the 70's anymore, wake up...cause every team has them and every team uses them to the advantage to get to Lord Stanley......sorry if i sound rude on this but i have alot of respect for some of the Euro's....

Gotta agree with Caper. There's a pretty good distribution of capable players from many lands and creeds. They probably wouldn't have wanted Aaron Carter 30 years ago, but I'll take him in a Habs uni any day!

Don't look now but I think most of the better home grown players wouldn't come to Montreal. They seem to avoid it.I would really like to know what Gainey hears when he approaches other teams for trades it would most likely be priceless. But if you know a way to sign Brodeur, Thorton ,Heatley Pronger Lecavalier Sakic and Staal  to name a few I would be willing to listen.Maybe we should start with raising a premeire  Canadian goalie after a couple of good seasons give him a bunch of money and work from there.Oh wait we tried that.

Kuvu, totally disagree with your point about Bulis, particularily since i consider him one of the few players on our team that we should actually keep.  Your suggestion about Euros, however, I do agree with.  Its curious how everyone gets so 'PC' and righteous about commenting on the  level of Europeans on the Habs as if its a prejudiced commentary - it's not people; its simply a matter of nurture, not nature.  I would suggest that few would argue that North American players play the game differently than European player.  No classify the European style of play as being 'softer' and less gritty than the N.A. style is, for the most part, accurate. As with anything, there are exceptions.  Anyone who chooses to ignore the obvious indifferent play by several of the Habs' Euros, isn't watching RDS closely enough.  I don't care if changes come about via trade or free agent signing of Euros or N.A. players, the fact remains is that we need to get tougher and heartier.

I cannot agree or disagree on what you are saying. There is no doubt there is a chemistry problem on this team. I have been saying this since October. Whether you can point the finger at the Europeans or not I don't know. Sounds way too Don Cherry-like to me. I think the Europeans are just a piece of the chemistry puzzle problem, not the whole problem.

We discussed this one a few weeks ago, Kuvu.

It's a political hot topic, and I'm not wading in.  I don't care where the players are from as long as they perform to their abilities.

There are many Euro's in the league itself, but I was more wonDering how the habs let a few of there hometown Quebecors get away like Briere, St.Louis, Lecavalier, Bergeron, Gagne, and even Crosb, although not Fr cAN...but who loves Monteal as a fan himself.  I know there's alot to it but no Fr Canadian snippers on the team... Ribs?
