This team is just too fragile and divided to amount to anything other than a collective group of underachievers. Like gambling addicts who think that there just one more play away from turning around their misfortunes, so are those fans who think that this team, as it is currently put together, is just a couple of wins away from turning around their fortunes as well.
I have a great deal of respect for what Bob Gainey has done as a player, coach and GM but this has to be eating away at him. Not that he did not have a hand in it. After all, he has to accept some blame for the obvious poor team chemistry. On paper, there is no lack of skill on this team, particularly at forward and in what should be their #1 goalie. Sure, the defense is suspect and Theodore just simply stinks. For that matter, where's the scoring -- we're the second worst team in the East for average goals for per game.
Does anyone out there think that the Buffalo Sabres have a superior team to the Habs on paper? I think not. But look at the standings. Their passion, commitment level, consistency, work ethic and team spirit dwarf those of the Habs, game in / game out.
I'm not one of those fans advocating for quick fixes (trades) because the Habs would have no leverage at this time. Yet, I can't help but think if turning around this season relies on heart transplants for Theodore, Kovalev, Zednik, Robeiro, Bonk, and yes, even Koivu (because his consistency is not there this year), we're in big trouble. In fact, the biggest miracle would be seeing another team offering good value for any of these underachievers.
I remain a Habs fan through and through and, with the group of young players in the system, remain hopeful of a resurgence in one or two years.

Great first post, King!
By the way, you are one year - to the day - younger than me! (Which makes you a kid.)

Thanks for the welcome, Nil d. I hope to graduate from a newbie over the coming weeks. I look forward to more posts and in sharing thoughts on our beloved Habs.
