These are the facts. Theo was horrible and lost the game last night..again. I do not need my 35 years in the sport to tell me that. What is worse is that Gainey will come right back with him Thursday night. And then Saturday night. For a guy who is supposedly a "hockey genius", Gainey seems to be relying on some divine miracle to bring Theo around. I have been around this game long enough, and played enough goal, to recognize that Theo has just lost it. He has fought the puck from day one this year. Timing is off. Head not in the game. But putting him back in time and time again against NHL competition will NOT bring him around. EVery game that he has like last night (and he has had many lately) simply brings him further into the cavern of despair and lack of confidence. Trade him? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....unless you are aware of an NHL GM recently released from the funny farm, or who has been in a time capsule for 2 years,,.it ain't gonna happen.
I dug up one of my old posts from when Theo signed the big contract and I quote "4.5 million is alot of money to pay a guy who had one good season. I will go on record now as saying that this is the kiss of detah for the Habs and it will come back to bite us. In this day of salary caps, no one will want to take on that salary if Theo falters"
News flash, FEB 1, 2006- Theo has faltered. So what to do? Ship him to Hamilton. Hope he plays himself out of it down there against lesser competition. One thingI am figuring out about Gainey is that he has a HUGE EGO. Those years of success in Dallas and all the good things people said about him have gone to his bald head. He will not admit when he is wrong. He made CJ play Bonk night in and night out. CJ benches Theo and the first thing Gainey does is say "Claude, you were wrong. Theo should be playing". And for what? To save face. Bob you traded a very capable goalie in Garon for Bonk. Then you compounded the situation by giving into Theo and his agent and overpaying him. Now we are stuck with his contract and an unproven back up. Buh byye season. But hey Bob, I am sure that old magic that you had with an unlimited payroll in Dallas during the pre-cap days will be back in Montreal..I am pretty sure...maybe..could happen.

Unquestionably, Gainey is accountable to a certain extent for this mess. I was horrifed when the Garon for bonk deal was done. That move set up an inevitable series of chain reactions that have contributed to this team's demise. The over paying of Theodore occured because the team had no leverage in negotations because Garon had been traded. With no quality second goalie in the organization, it would appear infleunced the draft decision of Price, as opposed to drafting an impact forward. Tying up large dollars on Theodore and subsequently Kovalev left little cap wiggle room, and may have affected the length of Koviu's contract.
Nonetheless, I don't think too many people at the outset of the year felt Theodore would be this bad, that Zednik's play would tail off as much as it has, that Riberio the team's leading scorer in 03-04 would suddenly become no better than a fourth line center, that Souray would fall of the radar screen. No GM has a crystal ball and can for see all of these issues. Gainey made a pact with the devil when he traded Garon and he tied his own hands to improving this squad. No GM has an unblemished record. Based on his track record I think Gainey deserves a chance to make moves to up grade this team going forward. Problem is the team has very few marketable assets, and wisely he will not trade the young players that will make up the core of the team in the future. So is a fire sale the right way to proceed? Because right now the market value for the so called tradable players, Riberio Zednik, Theodore, Koviu based on contract obligations and or their performances is pretty low. Having said all that, at this point make some deals and clear cap room to try and rebuild, again..... Long time since 1993.

Really great post.
I think we were all surprised at how things turned out, even if there were some people upset about the size of Theo's contract and the Garon-Bonk trade. So although Gainey definitely has a big ego, and bears responsibility for the mess, I'm not counting him out yet.
I'm also not counting Bonk or Zednik out yet. Many players in this league, including great ones, have had half-season slumps, or out-of-nowhere seasons where everything just works (cf. Jose Theodore). I think the true value of those two players is unclear at this point. Same goes for Souray, who's been pretty mediocre in the "new NHL" but who has improved a lot since then.
We shall see. It does look like Gainey's not cutting it as a coach.
Agreed boys. And on the subject of THOUGHTS, here are mine from last night. I caution these are based on watching the 2nd and 3rd periods and turning the TV off when Carolina netted their 7th goal:
- Theo...do I really need to say it? Nice assist on Staal's 1st goal. I think it's time we just abandon the Theo experiment and go with one of the other guys.
- Carolina showed what it can mean to have a good tender. Get totally outplayed for most of the game, and still hammer a team.
- I have never seen a team play as well as they did in those 2 periods get beaten so badly. I mean the final tally was 34 - 26 in shots? Not even a goal in the 2nd or 3rd???
- The Habs had several chances to come back in the 2nd. They had like 4 PP's including a 5 on 3 and did nothing. I saw Carolina had no problem putting the puck in the net on their PP's.
- I did think Ribs had a decent game. At least he was visible out there. One positive.
- We need a legitamite scorer so badly. Both in even situations and on the power play.
- sourry plouf - I am counting Bonk out. He was not missed at all yesterday.
Bottom line - the score flattered Carolina. I didn't think they played that well, but they buried their chances. I am getting sick of losing and especially getting absolutely f*ck%ng destroyed, as they have lately. Something is really wrong with this club. It has been time to shake things up for a month and a half and still Mr. Patient does nothing? I'm sarting to lose mine...
AND ENOUGH THEO ALREADY - HE'S COSTING US GAMES!!!!!!

That is it in a nutshell 24. Everyone here knows how much I loved Theo, but have found myself beyond disgusted since November. It has reached a boiling point.
IMHO, if Bob keeps playing him he will destroy any chance Jose will once again become Bar-the-door. And he's going to destroy a once more than capable tender. He's fast becoming good for nothing. I refuse to believe he has completely lost it. But I think throwing him to the wolves is going to do nothing to help - quite the opposite. SEND HIM DOWN FOR GOD'S SAKE!
Theo - newsflash sweetie. I don't know how often I've yelled at you to stay on the blue ice, but for chrissakes, if you're going to wander MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO JERSEYS OF THE OPPOSITION'S COLOUR ANYWHERE ON THE ICE, BECAUSE YOU'RE GOING TO FLUB IT AND GIVE IT AWAY. AND DON'T LOOK AT YOUR DEFENSEMEN AS IF TO SAY "WHERE WERE YOU"? YOU SCREWED UP - AGAIN!
I swear, I don't think I can take this for much longer. For most of the game we outplayed Carolina. We hustle, hit and shoot (except Ribs-SHOOT RIBS, ON GOAL! BACK-PASSING WILL NOT PUT THE RUBBER IN THE NET!) and get sweet bugger-all from our 'tender. In fact, he should have been one of Carolina's stars last night.
I can't recall ever hearing the phone booth so quiet. And although I have NEVER left a game early or shut off the tube when we're losing and said I never would, I absolutely COULD NOT watch the end of that game last night. And if I had been there, I probably would have lost my lunch in the second period.
Theo, love, sorry but the McFarlane on my desk at work (when you were still wearing Vaughn and stopping pucks I may add) has a bag over his head this morning. And it's staying there.

Good post! I also have been calling him Mr. Patient for the last 2 months! Then when we finally think he's going to make a much need roster move, he fires the coach!
