Yeah what is BG waiting for?  Do we still have a shot at Luongo???

Luongo turns down Panthers' five-year, $30M offer

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Roberto Luongo has formally rejected a five-year, $30 million offer from the Florida Panthers, his agent told the Palm Beach Post on Friday.

Gilles Lupien, who represents Luongo, said Luongo wants a shorter deal than the offer the Panthers made earlier this month.

"We've said no to the offer," Lupien told the newspaper by phone from Montreal. "We're going to wait until the season is over, and then we are going to talk. We want to wait until at least April."

Luongo is 20-20 with a 2.95 goals against average and a .915 save percentage for the Panthers. On Saturday night Florida was 20-24-8 and fourth in the Southeast Division.

According to a source, which the Post did not name, the Panthers' offer would pay Luongo $3.6 million for the first season and $6.6 million in years two through five. Luongo is eligible for free agency after the 2006-07 season.

Luongo was awarded $3.2 million by an arbitrator last summer when the two sides could not agree on a contract.

In exchange, Carolina gave to the Blues three draft picks and three players. The package includes:
- Carolina's first-round pick in 2006.
- Toronto's fourth-round pick in 2006, previously acquired by the Hurricanes.
- Chicago's fourth-round pick in 2007, previously acquired by the Hurricanes.
- Tough guy forward Jesse Boulerice, a 27-year-old eighth-year pro
- Forward Mike Zigomanis, a 25-year-old fifth-year pro
- Magnus Kahnberg, 25, an unsigned Carolina draftee from Sweden who will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1

So basically Carolina gives nothing up on their roster.  Nice.

Bob, are you listening?????  Look out for the Hurricane.  Its time has now come.

Although some agreed with me that Weight plays small at times, he's not afraid of traffic.....HELLO BOB?  ANYONE HOME?????

He is trying, but offers aren't going through...you can't make a trade to worsen the team. And Carolina gave up a 1st round draft pick, which isn't done too often.

Yep..in reality Carolina gave up some loose change because even their draft picks are not high this year. Obviously Carolina is making a statement that they want to contend.

I know that draft picks often amount to nothing (especially in Montreal) but isn't that a steep price? 6 for 1? I imagine there was a bit of a price inflation because a lot of teams must have been interested. St Louis rebuilding, Carolina wants to win now.

The 'Canes are the top team in the league and they just got better, so you can bet they have their eyes on the prize.

I think the Habs would be better to hold onto any draft picks (even though we haven't made use of them in the past) and trade existing garbage to obtain young guys with upside. Weight is a good player, but he wouldn't really help that Habs that much.  They need size and grit, and Weight is a dancer.  Still, Bobby needs to start making some phone calls because other teams are making moves with way less trade bait than the Habs could offer.

Like any trade you can debate it to death lol. Bottom line is that obviously Carolina feels that this is their year to make some noise and from what I have seen, they are right. Weight will add a presence in there room with the young players. Personally it may be a bit steep a price to pay but time will judge that. If they make it to the finals this year no one will question it. If they bow out on the first round then all the fans will call for Rutherford's head.

There are fans in Carolina?  Could have fooled me.  If I had my way this team would have moved to Hamilton, Seattle or the 'Peg about 4 years ago...and the same goes for all of the southeastern US teams, with the exception of T-Bag.

Average Attendance this year so far...

1 Montreal 21,273  2 Tampa Bay 20,672  3 Detroit 20,099  4 Philadelphia 19,588  5 Ottawa 19,477 6 Toronto 19,384  7 Calgary 19,289   8 Vancouver 18,630 9 Minnesota 18,587  10 NY Rangers 18,069 11 Colorado 18,007 12 Los Angeles 17,724  13 Dallas 17,506  14 San Jose 17,066  15 Edmonton 16,824 16 Boston 16,792 17 Columbus 16,623  18 Pittsburgh 16,232 19 Florida 16,142 20 Buffalo 15,341 21 Atlanta  15,245 22 Phoenix 15,145  23 Chicago  14,684 24 Carolina 14,522 25 St. Louis  14,076 26 Nashville 13,982 27 New Jersey 13,796 28 Anaheim 13,788  29 NY Islanders 12,962  30 Washington 12,829

Sorry , I meant to add that the Player I like is Sillinger! Bigger, tougher, better shot and can skate well! Also a better two way player than Weight plus he's younger!

I'm sure he could be had for cheaper because he's underrated. Just a thought!

NASHVILLE (CP) - The Nashville Predators acquired journeyman centre Mike Sillinger from the St. Louis Blues for forward Timofei Shishkanov on Sunday.

Sillinger, 34, led the Blues in goals, including a team-high 11 power play markers, and ranked second on the club with 41 points in 48 games.

The Regina, Sask. native also led St. Louis and ranks among NHL leaders with a face-off winning percentage of 55.3 per cent.

"Mike  Sillinger is a battle-tested veteran who will help us both offensively and defensively," said Executive Vice President and General Manager David Poile in a statement.

"He is an all-purpose forward who can play in any situation and can play centre or on the wing.  He also gives us a top right-handed face-off man to complement Yanic Perreault."

Nashville will be the 11th NHL team for Sillinger, who has 439 points in 877 career games over 15 NHL seasons.

Yeah AB...Figgy served up a gem with that one!

Since it would take "THREE centres to replace Koivu", what on Earth (if anything) would it take to replace the likes of Doug Weight???

...I swear...it gets deeper around here with every passing day!

Oh...and don't forget that it is MY fault if/when Koivu leaves Montreal.  But, And-o blames YOU AB for not landing Weight though!!!  (...riiiiiigggggghhhhht!!!)

I agree!! Nashville got Sillinger for N_O_T_H_I_N_G!! He could have helped the habs immensely. You snooze, you lose Bob.

I wasn't allowed saying anything, but I must. I won't give too many details because I promised; but here it is, last week Gainey almost pulled off a big trade that would have sent 2 STAR PLAYERS TO MONTREAL, with an extra player that the other team wanted to offload; but at the very last moment it didn't go through. Why? Because the other GM pulled out at the last second when he decided to change up the deal and want more. This deal was similar to the Thornton deal, in terms of secrecy.

I'm by no means trying to champion Gainey, however I do want to get you guys to loosen up a bit lol. He is trying, and trying hard. I can put a million dollars down that this trade would have knocked yourselves off. And would have filled up the wagon above its weight limit. He will get something done if the price is right.

He's been snoozing since he got here! Slept through the whole lockout and off season! Signing Kovy was even a wild wet dream! Maybe I'm wrong.....Is Kovy a Hab?

I'll cut him some slack though and hope the longer his dream is, the more imaginative it becomes! Dream big Bob!

I agree, rather than take a chance on losing Saks in the off season, BG better trade him now for his replacements so we can continue dominating the league!

I say Saks for Richards, Lecavalier and Prospal! Is that fair? I thought not...better throw in Tim (the tool man ) Taylor! Now that sounds even!!!!

We should now not lose any ground and stay consistent in productivity! That is 82 points a game from all the centermen coming our way or was that 0.82/game?

I live to serve.  I wouldn't expect you to understand a simple statement because of your Koivu bias.  When I said we'd need 3 more centers, of course I meant that we need 2 more now, so, minus Koivu, we'd need 3.  If we lose him, you better hope it is to the West or he'll destroy the Habs 8 times a year.  And, and-o, it is also an offence to cross refence different threads without explanation.  Don't make me edit your posts

Sorry Figs but a bit of joking around is good for the team! Remember Gilmour? He kept the team loose and with him as our top centermen they made the playoffs(Saks CA season)! Actually he was a good leader! Very well liked and respected!

maybe I'm missing something, but can someone point me to threads where the "untouchable" Saku Koivu is not bashed?

Oh and I for some reason forgot to mention my original point when I read this thread, although i believe it was stated here anyways; Doug Weight basically got to choose where he wanted to go, and he said, he wanted a cup contender, and he said he wanted it to be a Canadian team, he got half of what he wanted, AND, it is known around the league he is just a re-a-player for the season, it is alot of give up for a rent a player IMO.
