untill the season is over , that's how we got in this mess ( Theodore , Kovalev , Bonk , etc. ) , these long term contracts lead to Theo-type situations with players taking too many nights off ..
players should be rewarded for what they have done , not what they might do ....this Bonk business is a travesty ....personally I hope Bonk and Kovalev light it up and then BG trades them ....they have never been consistent and never will be ...

What bothers me is that some here are saying that perhaps teh reason that teh team is not following Koivu as a captain is that because he has not signed and they do not want to follow a leader who may not be here next year. Uhmmm..yes..lets go with that. That makes absolutely no sense and if it was anywhere near factual, we need to be getting rid of the whole team and not Koivu.

Koivu should be signed or there will be 29 teams pushing his price up. Why wouldn't you sign him. Now, the details of the contract might be incentive laden based on personal and team performances. A decent base, say $1M, and then $100K for every 5 goals, $100K for each 10 assist, $200K for each 10 wins, $250K for each playoff round, $500M for finals and Cup. That could get his $3M to $4M...why not?
If you don't want to sign hi, you want to set him free or trade him?
If Koivu is not signed before the trade deadline, expect him to be gone in the offseason. I know that would make And-o and AB happy but we would then need to find a replacement as well as a 2nd and 3rd line center in the offseason.

Also must add that if Saks wants to stay, he would be bringing it every night, on and off the ice giving Gainey no choice but to reward him!
This is no time to be timid off the ice and look tired on the ice! He needs to dig deep and show that he can bring it this season! Gainey may then forget that he has missed alot of hockey through out his career!
I agree with FF! Show me what you can accomplish this season then we'll see in the off season where the parties stand! Actions will speak volumes!
But if it comes down to signing, and Gainey it too generous like he has been to Theo and Bonk etc. then as a fan wanting what's best for the team, that will be the worst case situation! It would again take up Cap room and limit his chances of bringing in an elete first line centermen and top four d-man!

I have never said not to sign him. But i would sign him to a short term deal that, as Figs put it, is incentive laden. I would also make him the number 2 center. The issue that Gainey faces is if he can pay Saks "number 2 center money" and still have cap room to go get a number one guy.

Saku brings it every night. It isn't always obvious because of the lackluster performances by some of his peers. And if we lose Koivu, then we'll need to pick up like 3 new centres. And a captain. And a team scoring leader. And a fan favourite. A guy who can get a point per game or, if he happens to have a night off, 3 points to lead the team to a win. The league would have a feast if Koivu was left unsigned. How many other guys out there get .9 to 1.0 pts a game and are paid more than Koivu? I'm sure there are a few.

You got that right. I agree that Koivu gives everything he has night in and night out and I am getting with all this Koivu bashing.
As has been already expressed by many on this board the Habs lack depth in this position so Koivu takes the brunt of the the work. Considering his responsibiliteis as Captain, in Montreal of all places, he does a very commendable job IMO.
It is also agreed that Koivu is a second line centre on most teams. Put him somewhere else with slightly reduced ice time and a better surrounding cast and you would see what he is capable of.
It would be great for the Habs financially if Saku would take an incentive laden contract but I cannot see him accepting such a deal. He is heart of this team.
The problem with getting into all this contract talk now is that no matter what he or the team bring to the table, the process of negotiation always leaves both parties with something of a bad taste in their mouths. The team offers him less than he thinks he's worth, so he turns it down, assumes he's going elsewhere next year, and gives it half effort the rest of the season. Now, I don't expect a player like Koivu ever to coast like Kovy does sometimes, but would he give it that second and third effort on a long night if his mid-season contract negotiations have failed? I don't think so.
An incentive-laden contract would be great, but getting into it now is just too dangerous it seems to me. Let Koivu have a great year and lead the Habs into the playoffs. Then we'll have to pay him more, yes, but he will have proved that he deserves it. If we can't afford him then, no doubt someone else will pay him what he wants. This will at least save us the trouble of trading another captain...
