(1) On the second goal against the Leafs, which replays showed clearly went in off a Leaf defenseman, as soon as the red light came on, he looked at the ref, as much as to say "I scored that one").
(2) Jacques Demers pointed out a recent incident during the second intermission: Claude Julien asked the team, in the dressing room, for suggestioins on how the team could do better. Kovalev said something to the effect of "Don't ask us. You're the coach; you get paid to come up with these things."
Now how's that for leadership? The captain needs to be a team player, a leader who shows up every night. Kovalev is not that guy.

Don't forget he also ran CJ down to the media after he was fired. I wonder if he is the player Barry mentioned who we would be surprised about as being a dressing room problem...

Barry, your silence is deafening!
(Or is your thong too tight so you're taking some time off?)

Barry couldn't take the tension after the win.... Can't blame him.
I think Kovy and Souray have showed why they can't captain this team over the past several games. It's a tough job being captain for the Habs... We know how fickle the fans can be.
Kovy definitely wouldn't make a good captain. He takes too many nights off and appears (judging solely upon some supposed comments) to have a flaw of character.

I would not normally repeat or comment on rumours or "supposed comments", but these came from Jacques Demers on national TV; I can't imagine he'd say that if he weren't 110% sure of it. He'd get his ass sued otherwise.

The guy who has the C deserves it...i wouldnt move it to anyone.... The management know who leads in that room...and if it were someone else...the C wouldnt stay there...

Thing is, we wouldn't really have been surprised about Kovalev being a dressing room problem. He has the reputation of being that kind of player. It would have to be someone who has more of a "great guy" sort of reputation, like Koivu, Bulis, Begin, Rivet, Bouillon....
What if it was Sundstrom? That would be funny. Most low-key, nondescript player ever.
CJ had good things to say about Kovy, saying that he was not a selfish player. If he is such a room problem, and not like by the players on his team, why does Gainey play him so much? He averages over 20 mins a game, and plays all 2 minutes on most of our powerplays. Don't you guys think that CJ and Gainey would punish a guy like that, not play him? I used to have a history of being trouble in the room and on the bench, and everytime I did it my ice time went down big time. I think you guys are reading to much into some statements that were not meant as bashing, but possibly trying to make the best of a bad situation. Kovalev made it no mystery that he had a hard time with CJ's system when he first got to Montreal. Now all of a sudden he is poison for saying the same thing he said about a guy who was his coach after he was fired? Also why would Gainey have stripped Zeds and Souray of their respective A's and given one to AK? You ever think that Theo is our poison? We dont seem to play when he is in net. And before anyone even asks, yes I will always defend Kovalev. I think he makes it exciting to be a Habs fan again. Today I got to tell all the Leaf fans at work, "don't worry, the Laffs arent the first team that couldn't stop AK and they wont be the last." Who else can we as Hab fans say that about?

It's a lot harder to discipline a guy you're paying millions to play for you, and to be your best player, no less. The whole thing is pretty delicate for a coach/GM. It's the same reason why it's so hard to bench Theo, in some ways.
But hey, no denying Kovalev is a great great player when he wants to be. I wish it was more often, but boy when he gets going...I'm hoping for a breakout in the playoffs at least, but I'd like to see more regular season games where he flat out dominates like he can. We are still far from even getting into the playoffs.

You know, if this was the first time I heard the "Kovalev is selfish label", I could put it down to maybe a bitter coach or players who were jealous. But this label has followed him everywhere he has played. As for Julien saying only goo dthings about Kovalev when he got fired (rather than putting him down), it is because, unlike Kovalev, Julien has class. Trust me, when he had that press conference, he could have spent 3 hours pointing fingers at everyone from Gainey down to Theo. Some things that happened this year would scare you if they came out. For what purpose? He needs to coach in this league again..and he will. I need to ask what purpose Kovalev served by calling down Julien after he was canned? Could he have not shown some class and kept his mouth shut and wished him well? After all, CJ at least afforded Kovalev that courtesy. It speaks volumes about the type of individual Kovalev is.

Actually Barry, maybe it is time for me to flip flop on my comments, you are absolutely right about what a class act CJ was, never really looked that deep into his comments, or lack of them. My hat does go off to him for how he handle the cards he was dealt. I said it yesterday, he we do wonders when he coaches a good team.
