Many of you may recall that I am taking part in the 6th annual "World Pond Hockey Championships" in a little place called Plaster Rock, in northern New Brunswick in February. This thing started as a small event on a lake in Plaster Rock and they now have a waiting list of over 60 teams trying to get in. This year we have representation from 26 US States, 12 provinces and territories and 12 countries world wide.
Now the rules are different. It is a 4 on 4 format. You have no goalies and the nets essentially consist of a bar that is about 10 inches off the ice and a goal is scored by sliding the puck under the bar.. no lifties lol. So scores of 25-20 are not uncommon. Now my team consists of myself and 3 former teamates from my days at ST. Thomas University. Because we all played university hockey, we have been grouped in the top division. Now there are only a couple of problems. Number one, myself and one other guy were goalies together at STU. How much good are we going to be when you use a metal bar for a net? None. Another problem is the fact that our training regime has not been too strict. In fact., it consists of a weekly get together exercising our biceps lifting glasses of Captain Morgan or Molson Beer. And yes, because of this, we now have a hard time tying our skates because the "Molson Muscle" prevents us from bending over to reach them. And last, but not least, the fact that our primary purpose is to have fun and spend as much time in the beer gardens as possible, scouting the opposition.
However, that is not even NEAR the worst part. We received our tournament draw yesterday. Our first game on Thursday night (you play 5) is against a team from out west. Names on the team? Oh I am so happy you asked! Geoff Courtnall, Russ Courtnall and 2 other guys I never heard of. Our first game on Friday is against one of the defending champion teams from the Boston area, 3 former Boston College teamates.
I have put a plea out to CJ to come on down and lace em up but I can tell you that his best playing days are well behind him too. It ain;t gonna be pretty. The good news? We will be beat out by Saturday afternoon an dfree to concentrate on more dryland training at the pub.
Now, time to go check on my life insurance policy.

That's a great event. Should be a treat to rub shoulders with the Courtnall brothers. Trying to keep up might be a challenge. You might try putting a strip of tape on Russ' skate blades.
Best of luck, Barry!
