Should theo pay back part of his salary or agree to extend his contract by 1 year for the same $16M (i.e. spread the $16 over 4 years instead of the current 3 years)?
I believe Theo has a morale obligation to do such a thing.

Let's just suppose that Theodore does in fact feel bad for the way he has played, so bad in fact that he takes your suggestion and tries to give money back or extend his contract for nothing. The NHLPA would hang him, the team and probably file a grievance against the league. The NHL would probably fine the Habs for trying to find a loop-hole in the salary cap or just wouldn't accept the contract as it was written.
What I would prefer Theodore to do is get his head out of his rear-end or the clouds or wherever the heck it is, and start playing like a number 1 NHL goaltender night in and night out.

What has pi**ed me off in the past is this. Let's reverse roles here. Let's say Theo had been playing like this in the past and signed a new contract for, let's say, 1 million a year. Let's say this year he stands on his head and has that MVP type season. OK. How much do you want to bet that his agent, Don Meehan, goes to Gainey this summer and says "If you do not renegotiate my client's contract he will NOT be reporting to camp"? This has happened too many times for me to remember. Mediocre player signs a long term contract. All of a sudden has a career year and scores 30 goals. Refuses to honour the rest of his contract (see Alex Yashin in Ottawa) until it is re-negotiated. The players and agenst LOVE the long term deal as long as it is benefitting the player, as is currently the case with Theo.
Don Meehan said that Theo was an elite goalie in the NHL and deserved Elite Goalie money. What do you suppose Don Meehan is saying now? Oh what's that Donny? You are not taking Bob Gainey's phone calls?

you said it Mario, I'm also sick of the way these players and agents "negotiate". even worse, it seems when a player is aproaching the end of a contract, his play improves, then he signs a long term deal , and sucks.......tho this doesn't seem to be the case with my favourite player Saku, I wish he would pick it up a notch....
Well, for better or for worse, NHL contracts can no longer be re-negotiated and even a buy-out or every year after the first-year when placed in the minors, counts against the cap. We might be stuck with Theo.
Habtastic, thank you for confirming my worst fear; we're stuck with Theo
Well, heet's domino-effect theory pretty well sums up why it will never happen. The NHLPA is a powerful union. We're either "stuck" with him, or will have to give him away for minimal returns. My wish is that he'd simply turn his game around and play like he can - and used to. It would solve all of the Habs' ills, as a team starts from the goalie on out.

Amen to that.

Mario raises a good point, I thought with the new CBA that a team can take any one player and bring them to arbitration if they don't play to their potential even if they are under contract???
The longer this goes on, I really blame the greedy players for last years non season. They want the big bucks and then do not deliver. Not just hockey. Look at Ramerez from the Boston Red Sox 56 million.I knw he plays well but Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeees when will it end with these salaries
does anybody know if contracts can be re-negotiated? theo doesnt deserve half of what he's being paid. do you think he's aware of it though? he never seems to take responsibilty for his poor play. he's probably still blaming it on his "bad" pads.
