SUNRISE, Fla. (CP) - Star goaltender Martin Brodeur has agreed to a $31.2-million US, six-year contract extension with the New Jersey Devils.
The deal will pay him $5.2 million a year starting next season. He'll be 40 years old at then end of the new deal following the 2011-12 season which likely ensures he'll play his entire NHL career with the Devils.
The 33-year-old Montreal native, who is earning $5.237 million this season, will be Canada's starting goalie once again at the Winter Olympics next month in Turin after leading the team to gold in 2002 at Salt Lake City.
Brodeur has won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goalie the last two seasons and has played in eight all-star games during his brilliant career.
Marty Turco, one of Brodeur's two backups in Turin, signed a $22.8 million, four-year contract extension with Dallas on Jan. 5 which will pay the 30-year-old $5.7 million a season. Brodeur, who doesn't have an agent, negotiated his own deal with GM-head coach Lou Lamoriello. They decided to scrap an option year they had for next season at $6.08 million.
Florida's Roberto Luongo, who completes Canada's Olympic goaltending trio, has been offered close to $30 million over five years from the Panthers but the 26-year-old doesn't want to talk contract until after the season.

Wow, if they use Theo's contract as a measuring stick then they should both get 10 mil a season!
Broduer is a world class goalie and person to negotiate on his own to secure his position with the Devils based on a bargain price!
As for Luongo, He wants to be a free agent! Wait till off season, he states! We missed the boat on him! If the rumour was for real, we could of traded Theo and Ryder or Zed for him! Did you see his last game? 47 saves on a 3-2 loss but most spectacular! He is for real! Big, fast and just plain great!
No way I add Ryder to a trade when you give up Theo. Zed, amybe, but he isn't as useless as his play has been this year. Trade 4 or five draft picks since we can't seem to do any good with those. Anyway, Luongo will sign for...Ottawa? My guess if he wants to play for a contender.
