MONTREAL – Canadiens GM Bob Gainey announced Tuesday that forward Raitis Ivanans has been called up from the Hamilton Bulldogs and that forward Jonathan Ferland has been assigned to the American Hockey League team.

Ivanans, 27, has played in 26 games with the Bulldogs in 2005-06, collecting two goals and 65 penalty minutes. Earlier this season, the 6-foot-3, 263-pound native of Riga, Latvia, took part in two games with the Canadiens, going without a point and picking up seven penalty minutes. Ivanans, signed as a free agent on July 16, 2004, suffered a facial bone fracture on Oct. 11, which kept him inactive for one month. On Nov. 11, he was assigned to the Bulldogs.

Ferland, 22, appeared in seven games with the Canadiens, scoring his first NHL goal in his first NHL game on Jan. 3 against the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Bell Centre. The 6-foot-2, 209-pound right-winger collected nine points, including five goals, and 47 penalty minutes in 14 games with the Bulldogs. He had missed 23 games with a knee injury. Ferland, a native of Ste-Marie de Beauce, was the Canadiens’ fifth pick, 212th overall, in 2002.

I know, I know this does not add goaltending scoring or defence but I totally agree with it. As a coach I know exactly what Gainey is trying to do here. He is trying to add some spark anyway he can. Philly, Ottawa and Toronto all have muscle. Look to watch the fists fly these 3 games. Ivannis and Downey are not there to preach the gospel to the team

It would be nice to see Ivanans, Murray, Downey on Habs 4th line, That would be good line to do some crushing, tackling and fighting. Why not put Ivanans standing front off goalie in our PP, like Sens use Chara.

Someone on here had a great idea a while back. They mentioned putting Komi in front of the net on the PP. At the time I thought that was brilliant. Komi is huge. Why not?

I would put Ivanis with Saks and Kovy to create some room for them! There doesn't seem to be chemistry on that line anyway! Maybe Saks and Kovy will play bigger!

I agree with you there. Zed's not doing anything anyways and Kovy has been getting cracked alot recently.

Seems to work okay for Ottawa with Chara in front.  He may not get the goals, but it would be hard for a goalie to see around him.

In the words of Cosmo Kramer "Giddy Up!!!"

Or Maury Ballstein "Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' about!!!"

Or John Blutarski "Did we quit when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor??"
