Canadiens acquire Downey off waivers
Permalink Closed

MONTREAL (CP) - The Montreal Canadiens, short on size and muscle up front, claimed tough right-winger Aaron Downey off waivers from the St. Louis Blues on Monday.

Downey, 31, had two goals and 45 penalty minutes in 17 games for the Blues this season. The Shelbourne, Ont., native previously played in Dallas, Chicago and Boston. He is earning $450,000 US this season.

The Canadiens also recalled centre Tomas Plekanec, who had been on a two-game reconditioning stint with the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs after missing 13 NHL games with a knee injury.

The Canadiens started the season with Raitis Ivanans as their enforcer, but he fractured the orbital bone in an eye in the first week of the season and was later demoted to Hamilton.

The lack of an enforcer was underlined last week when the Canadiens' defence took a pounding from Flames' forecheckers in a 3-2 loss in Calgary.

if(!sops){if(p.sops){var sops=p.sops;}else{var sops="";}}
if(dUnitBox==true){boxAd=true;}
if(boxAd){if((!dUnitSky)||(dUnitBox)){place300x250();}}

Defenceman Sheldon Souray was ejected from the game for wearing a brace on his oft-injured left wrist during a fight with Calgary tough guy Darren McCarty.

The Canadiens were also outmuscled in a 6-2 loss on Saturday night in Vancouver.

The six-foot-one, 221-pound Downey has played in 137 career NHL games, scoring five goals, two assists and 273 penalty minutes.

I've seen this guy play probably a dozen times when he was "down on the farm" in Providence playing for the Baby B's.  Always created a buzz when he took to the ice.  I can't guarantee that he'll skate any better than the goofball practice crasher, but I can guarantee that if Downey crashed a practice, and just one guy tried to remove him from the ice, that poor guy would end up sipping his dinner through a straw for a couple months.  He's a tough SOB.  My prediction - Cleghorn will like him.

Well, his offensive output (2 goals) is double what we've seen from Bonkers this year.......

  Wow! What a pick up Gainey, this should help us sail into the playoffs!

 Is that the best he can do? Don't we already have a couple tough guys in our farm? Ivanis or whoever?

 Time for a trade for an impact player! Enough of this mickey mouse stuff!

The Foxy Lady.  I know it well.  He'll find a few nice establishments in Montreal too.

Let's see... This guy is so weak that even the worst team in the league didn't want him anymore. I hope BG got him for a good price.

He apparently had some arguments with his coach about ice time, or lack thereof.
