Bob Clarke started the rebuilding of Dallas with the drafting of Mike Modano among others in Minnestoa - Gainey (who got hired by Clarke originally as coach) put the finishing touches on (Brett Hull/Ed Belfour etc.)....

You'd have to say the Dallas and NHL economics were very different then also!
Gainey has yet to prove much as the Habs GM! But in all fairness, he only has had three years in Habsville! Has he improved the team in that time or has Savard done more in his short tenure?
Another fact also would be that we don't have a Modano in his prime to work with! Without Madano, Stars don't win the Cup but Sabres do!

Ab- gotta agree with you on those points. Gainey built Dallas in a different economic era. Dalls ownership opened the vault in the old free-spending NHL and Gainey was free to spend. Now, with the new cap system, he is being forced to pick and choose. Maybe he cannot adapt to this? Time will tell. But in the meantime as habs fans, we have no choice.
