I for one posted many times that Gainey isn't a perfect GM and maKes mistakes but if we compare Hainsey and Streit, I think Striet is working out OK! In saying that though I still don't agree that Gainey should of gambled and called him up to lose him on the waiver and pay half his wage still! He should of called a different D-MAN at the time unless it was a calculated move to shed Hainsey! If that is the case then it's really stupid as he could of packaged him in a trade later on rather then continuing to pay his wages!
Sorry to ramble on about something that is an old issue but because Gainey didn't fill the void in the off season in getting a top d-man. Streit is at least adding depth to that position for now!
he's too small, unless he played like Bouillon, he's just a below average Dman
He does bring a much needed attribute to the habs defence that, besides Markov, is sorely lacking. Skating and puck movement. We are sorely immobile back there and other teams are keying on it. Streit is one of the best pure skaters on the team (according to CJ) and I tend to agree. Now the problem has been the fact that his inexperience causes him to give the puck away and I think Gainey is hoping that will cure itself. Irregradless, the guy has grown on me the last month or so because of the aformentioned attributes. I think he is a good 5th or 6th man and gives us some movement on the PP. Also has a surpsingly decent shot but does not use it eneough. Besides..I love the way the french announcers pronouce Streit lol.

You mean "Schtright"?. From what I heard about the RDS guys, they ask the players themselves for the proper pronunciation of their (for us) unusual names. I'm guessing that "Schtright" is right. Hey, I just rhymed!

Streit was a good pick up by Gainey in the off season anticapating the New NHL with more skating & puck movement etc. Also Streit has played several years in Switerzland & is the captain of The National team with the emphasis on passing/skating etc on the larger ice surface in Europe - It was worth a shot to bring him over and he can only get better with more ice time and his confedience should grow as the man who brought him over is now his coach..........
Streit is -8 and has 7 points in 28 games. He is nothing more than a 7th defenceman on any team. Hainsey has 7 points in 24 games and is -1. I think Hainsey has a better upside.

The fact that both Julien and Gainey feel the need to use him this much is an indication of where we are at behind the blueline

I totally agree with John and Barry. Although Streit has some quick feet and actually recovers pretty well if he get's caught he is way too weak to handle the big men in this league and looks really confused as to what to do at the point. He often just throws a wrister from 90 feet out. That's probably not going to work at this level.
I am still unsure as to why Komi gets to play like twice a month. His confidence in a real game must be really shaken by this point.

Komi's been given a lot of playing time though, and has been in a slump nonetheless. Streit, on the other hand, has been improving steadily. Obviously Komi has the upside, but he's still got a lot of work to do on his skating.
Couldn't you just argue that maybe it is time to let some of these young guys play? It's not like the "regulars" are setting the world on fire. Yo-yoing these guys up and down from the minors can't be good for their confidence and development.
Steit hasn't been great, but why not let him play 15 games in a row and see what happens? Same with Komi. Defenseman traditionally need to log a lot of ice time to develop.
Kostisyn looked good out there last night. Why not bench Bonkers for a few games (or the season!) and let him have a go. Maybe try Perezhogin together with Kovalev? I guess what I am saying is the wagon is officially broke so why not experiment with some solutions? At the very least, these guys will be all the more ready for next season. They can't do any worse than 6 goals in 14 minutes...
