Would we have to change our name? Would the team leave the city? Would there be any impact at all? I know there are some great minds on this board, what do you all think? Especially curious to hear from those from La Belle Province who might hear what Quebecers think.
I would think that there would be little change, as CanadiEns means french Canadian immigrant and there is much history with the team as a Quebec team. The other issue is that if Quebec seperates, there is a good chance that Montreal and surrounding areas will seperate from Quebec and re-join Canada. But that is a politcal thing, so I digress...

No offense to those in Quebec who are not seperatists, but I compare Quebec threatening to leave to my ex-wife. She threatened for years to leave and finally I said "Don't let the door hit you on the a%% on the way out"

Is Gilles Douceppe actually trying for a referendum again?? Is the thought of seperation still going strong??? It would be interesting if it happened. I believe canada would be cut off from the east coast right ?As far as the Team why would they have to leave ???
It would be great for our east coast friends on this board if Quebec separated, think of how short the drive to Ontario would be...
As a Maritimer descendant of one Anglo and one Franco Quebecker, I'd have to say it would be terrible to see Quebec go. There are so many intertwining connections there, and my story's far from unique. For many Maritimers, Montreal is the closest thing to "our" big city, even if it is so far away.
But hey, you can't force people to stay together. Whatever Quebeckers want to do is fine by me, altough I don't think a 51% vote is enough to justify something as drastic as creation of a new country.

I agree Plouf. What has not been throroughly explianed to the people of Quebec is what a Quebec Country would look like? Currency? Pensions? Health Care? All the corporate head offices in Montreal that emply thousands..gone.

For those who missed it - Take a map of Canada. Fold the map so that Quebec is not shown anymore. Notice that the East Coast and Ontario are closer. It's an old joke from the first time they held a referendum.

I guess I won't try anymore humour. For those who missed it - Take a map of Canada. Fold the map so that Quebec is not shown anymore. Notice that the East Coast and Ontario are closer. It's an old joke from the first time they held a referendum.
Nahh I caught it heet. I was just getting all excited cause I am in the concrete business and was thinking about the tender for the bridge over Quebec

All the Anglo's would leave, unless the West island stayed part of Canada, so you can imagine what THAT team would look like! Lots of hands and speed...zero toughness and lots of cigarette smokers.
Anyhow we don't have to worry about this sh*t for another 2 years until/when Andre Boisclair (the gay, coke sniffing candidate) and the Parti Quebecois win the PROVINCIAL election. That is the one that dictates a referendum.

..................I have nothing but the utmost respect for Quebec , the language issue etc . , however my position is that Quebec will never separate , there is no Constitutional provison and no matter how many referendums are held it would only be a unilateral declaration by a political party such as the Bloc . Furthermore from a simply theoretical perspective if Canada is divisible then so is Quebec ....the Aboriginal people of Quebec do not want to separate ..and I for one have never understood how Canada and Quebec for that matter could contenance granting sovereignty to a segment of the Quebec populace and yet deny self-determination to the Cree and First Nations who by International Law would have precedence to sovereignty .
I love Quebec, I was born there and the people are great, but anyone who wants to seperate should take a trip to Slovakia, and see how they are doing after seperating from the Czechs.
It's not a pretty picture. People are having a rough time.
It's never going to happen anyway - the tourist boycott alone would be enough to cripple
They have nothing in the way of industry, and little in the way of natural resources to even attempt economic or energy self-sufficiency.
They want to use outr currency, Stamps, passports, etc? Don't forget to pay back all those sweet federal transfer payments you recieved...and you won't be getting any more.
They'd make Newfoundland look wealthy within 6 months.
I'm all for them leaving. get rid of that ridiculous seditious party known as the Bloc, that shouldn't even be recognized as a Federal party. get rid of all those exta seats in the House and Senate that don't add up. Get rid of the Millions per year the Feds and provinces dump in their laps because they are dirt poor.
Where is QC going to go, exactly?? LOL They have nothing in the way of industry, and little in the way of natural resources to even attempt economic or energy self-sufficiency. God help us. They would be called the Montreal Quebecuois' or something funny like that.
Yes, why do we have a seperate "debate" in Quebec? That Gilles guy looks out of place at those debates. It's like having some spoiled kid at the podium, chirping in ever now and again. You can tell all the other leaders feel like they are dealing with some jackass but have no choice but to listen to him for fear of the Quebec vote. It's a political joke.
I saw old Gilles in an interview once claim that thay would use US currency because Hawaii does it??? Something just that stupid.
But what a hockey team they would have to present at the olympics as a independant country. I figure Canada would still kill them, which would be very satisfying for true Canadians...
You know, if Quebec ever do seperate (and I hope they don't) I would love to see Montreal seperate from Quebec....if that were to happen I would laugh my a$$ off.........If the people of Montreal wanted to have there own referendum....I bet that douch bag Gilles Douceppe would have the nerve to try to tell them that they could not have one.

You know as I was reading that, I realized, as much as I have heard the term, I've never actually seen a real douche bag (no Mike Keenan jokes please), so I looked it up on google. Much to my disappointment, it looks just like a hot water bottle.
Needless to say, I was expecting something more exotic

Duceppe doesn't bid for a referendum, the Parti Quebecois does and they're a provincial party. As for sovereignty support... It's the highest it's been since 1995. A shame, really...
