It is raining quite heavily today in Montreal and it seems quite appropriate. It is hard being a fan of a team with a make-up, maybe a vision, that does not match your own. We had a huge opportunity this summer to re-make this team. We could buy-out players and not have it count against the cap. We could sign a plethora of free-agents who could have filled our biggest needs. We could have brought in the leadership so that all our young players would have head someone to look up to. Laperriere and Damphousse were begging to come home, we closed the door, but opened the vault to others who have had a history of coasting.
We knew the NHL would be fast, yet we kept slow players. We knew we had a bunch of rookies coming up, but we did not insulate them. We knew were soft in mind and body, but we did not get tougher.
I was a huge fan of Gainey coming in, especially when looking at all the managerial talent we had sitting there, people with great track records and yet poor decisions were continouly made. How? Are their minds still stuck in the old NHL? Of course, they are not alone in their blunders. Other teams made much larger splashes and are in worse shape, but that isn't supposed to happen with the star-studded management team we are supposed to have.
So here we are, finally realizing that there are certain players who take advantage of being local heroes and others who just can't fit into the new NHL and we try to trade them. Nothing. I have been so excited this past week to see what Gainey and his team would pull out of their hat, absolutely sure it would be a gem, that one or more other GM's would get fleeced by our astute group. Nothing.
So they fire CJ instead. One of the brightest young coaches around and we had him and sacrificed him. Now we bring in Carbonneau and will probably bring in Robinson after he overcomes his stress ailments so that he can quit here when he gets into a slump. Gainey has taken the reigns and may be able to get a few wins to bring up the trade value of a couple of players, but what will it change?
