Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey has apparently seen enough. With just three wins in their last 12 games, the Habs have fallen down the ranks and out of a playoff spot.
While the likes of Saku Koivu, Michael Ryder and (to a lesser extent) Alex Kovalev produce on a daily basis, the team needs an all-around effort to win.
Head coach Claude Julien has tried to mix up his lineup, hoping that someone would gel somewhere, but it hasn't worked. It's time for a change.
According to La Presse, Gainey is in the midst of trying to complete a significant trade that would change the chemistry of his club.
Gainey is apparently serious discussions with a number of teams, one of them being the Chicago Blackhawks.
La Presse suggests that the Hawks' three most attractive pieces of inventory are Mark Bell, Kyle Calder and Tyler Arnason, with Bell being the most appealing and most expensive. Montreal apparently is also interested in expensive veteran defenseman Adrian Aucoin
The paper claims the Habs are offering center Mike Ribeiro in a package deal that would also include a defenseman and a younger player.
Blackhawks pro scout Marc Bergevin was in Colorado yesterday keeping a close eye on the Canadiens, while Montreal's Director of Professional Scouting, Pierre Gauthier, has been attending Chicago games.

Pretty interesting, and I believed I said this a few months ago that Montreal has somethings to gain from Chicago, and 3 out of the 4 players I mentioned there are players I included in various trades
Also i would like to note that Pierre McGuire mentioned that Thedore has been playing hurt for most of the season, which could be the reason for his weak play. Which would discredit any trade rumors involving theo....
If I remember correctly Gainey doesn't want to get rid of Markov, there were some GMs asking for his services, but Gainey didn't want. So it would have to be a good deal for Gainey to get rid of Markov

I like Markov and can see him developing into a Zubov type player! Like you state, Gainey probably wouldn't trade Markov!..........I hope!
Was Markov mentioned as a possible target for a trade? I probably wouldn't want to lose him, but Souray has been junk this year, both offensively and defensively. I would part with him ASAP.
Mark Bell is the real deal (with size and toughness) and I would trade Ribs and possibly Souray for him. Even Calder or Arnason would help out the Habs, who lack scoring and grit upfront. Aucoin is a great d-man too. I do't know if they have the trade bait to get those guys, though.

From TSN... MMatthew Barnaby, Martin Lapointe and Jassen Cullimore are the names most-often mentioned in trade rumours although Tallon would not mention any names. The Hawks won't trade any of their younger players.
Those three could also help! Imagine Barnaby on a line with Begin...just a thought!

There'd be more **** disturbed with that line than at a Port-A-Potty annual cleanout spree.

Barnaby's a total tool. Most of the Rangers couldn't stand him, I seem to remember, and he's a cheap shot artist. I'd rather not see the playoffs than have any more poison like him in the locker room
