Well, it's mid-season gut check time and the fur has flown on more than a few threads (actually, it's been flying for a while). Personally, I come to this thread for information, and, (because I live in Edmonton), a little Habs-style comradeship. I want to know the condition of Sheldon's knee. Speaking of knees, I'm also curious if someone can illuminate about Plekanec's knee.
I'm not as big on the name calling and the aspersions about BG's, or CJ's, or _____ player's intelligence/cojones/attitude/abilities/etc. -- although I was pretty pissed off at Radek Bonk last night.
Therefore, in the interest of Board harmony, if someone is going to rant, could they somehow indicate that their post is a rant -- based on emotional venting, as opposed to a rational discussion. I'm not saying don't rant/vent, but just let us know before we click on the thread. Some of the ranter/venters have good information and perspectives in their other posts, but I'm simply not interested in rolling the words around in my head "CJ is an idiot", or "BG doesn't deserve to be in the NHL".
So, if you want to get excited, how about adding a little "rant" tag to the subject topic, or an emoticon. Otherwise, I tend to blip over those posts.
While I'm pontificating -- I'll also offer up a little bit of the old gut check for us fans. Last night was a disappointment. BUT, here we are on the road, which the team has said in the past is a good place to come together as a team. And, we're already facing adversity, as witnessed last night. But before we set up road blocks on the bridges back into Montreal and deny access to Bonk, I thought the guy looked pretty shook after the goal -- several shots of him sitting with his head down on the bench. Down, down, down. Players don't often get the chance to lose a game for the team, but he knew he lost it for us. His bad. I LIKED the way Julien put him back out. I think Bonk demonstrated contrition and Julien gave him the opportunity to make reparation (as opposed to Bertuzzi's 'I'm sorry it happened' type of 'apology' -- BTW, would you want to see Bertuzzi play alongside Beliveau, or Lafleur, or Robinson, or the Rocket? Bertuzzi would look good with Bobby Clark -- oops, bit of a rant there, sorry).
Anyway, what happens next is that the team has two more games to come together and start in on the second half of the season. They'll be out West and spending lots of time together. Hopefully, Bonk, for one will come back with more vigour and commitment.
And back to us fans. You may notice that once I get going, I can type a lot -- well, that's how I make a good part of my living. So, I like writers and at trying times like these (as a fan), I think of an Al Purdy poem, by a venerable man of Canadian letters who was a literary kin to the Rocket. Purdy's 1977 poem, 'A Handful of Earth -- to Rene Levesque', closes with a line that captures what I feel about Les Canadiens. The poem begins by offering a proposal for Canada to join Quebec, if that's what it will take to keep our country together. Purdy then describes places such as Vancouver Island, Yonge Street, Chicoutimi and Cote des Neiges, and how important they are to him as part of our country. They're part of his admonition to keep Canada together, because, as he closes the poem "I have no other place to go".
So, if you're still with me -- that last line says everything to me about being a Habs fan. And as we start the second half, I guess I'll forgive Radek Bonk -- as long as he learns from his mistake. All we need to do is get into the playoffs and Dryden or Roy knows what can happen. But I'd also like to see us be a little gentler with our fellow fans along the way. Because, I have no other team.
This board's posters ROCK! So what if there's a little venting or animosity! We're all adults and can handle it! We don't want to be too soft ala the Habs!
Nice post man, couldn't agree more... I am a B.C.er living in Calgary right now and I, like you, come to this forum for information and insight about the habs. Although I have been coming to this site for a few years now I rarely post anything because there seems to be few oppertunities for discussing things reasonably without the usual tirades about expelling the traitors that aren't earning their keep. Instead of good insight and discussion what I see a lot of the time is bickering over semantics and mudslinging over hypothetical trades and team changes. I have had to hear it my whole life about being a habs fan and I don't like seeing people slam my team, especially when they are fans themselves.
And AB what can I say man... you have done it again. You managed to take a genuine fan's opinion and call him soft for not hating on the team he cheers for. To say the least I think our opinions of what being a fan of a team is about differ greatly.
Actually, AB, I didn't say 'no ranting'/'no venting' -- I just said that people wanting to tee off on the Habs or fellow board members should give the rest of the us a heads-up by typing in 'rant' or 'vent' on the subject line. They're your feelings and you're entitled to them, I'd just like people to make a little extra effort and have the courtesy to let us know what they're about with their post.
Otherwise, if I see too many posts by someone who's freaking and peaking on a regular basis -- I just tune them out. It's kind of like, "if someone posts something and no one reads it, have they posted anything?"
On a lighter note: apparently the NHL is doing random tests for steroids today -- at least Ribeiro should sleep well tonight.

AB, I'm with you on this one. Habs' fans are passionate to say the least. Most of the posts on the board are personal opinions or speculative. Frankly, it would be boring if everyone agreed all of the time.
MDM -- totally unfair of you to attribute that statement to AB -- he never called anyone soft for not getting "a hate on".

Stuart- I want to thank you for a well thought out post. Well put. I really did not see it anti anyone. You simply said when you see a post that is full of name calling etc, you simply pass over it and move on. That is your right as it is my right to read them. I do agree that I would like to see us (me included) put more thoughts into our posts . Maybe a bit of reserach to back up our opinions. But it is a fine line we walk because it is our emotions that make us habs fans.

Please don't get me wrong my Co-Albertan, I wasn't trying to be critical of what you stated but rather my opinion is that the board is just fine the way it is! What you stated is that we need to warn others before we rant but I disagree! It's like saying excuse me before we fart or sneeze!
Why not just be ourselves and post away! Sometime we go off on a tangent and become critical or show emotion by being frustrated with the team! Doesn't that also make for an interesting read! It also brings out our personality which helps everyones get to know each other a little! I may not have specific information about the team like others do but I still have an opinion! Why have the posters become robotic and not display feeling naturally?

I absolutely don't know what your problem is but it seems like you follow up my posts with clear sarcasm or try to sabotage my charactor!
You have 20 posts and about half are a direct bash to myself! It's like an irritating mosquito!
I guess if I show my distaste it will only give you a further cheep thrill to continue so I will ignore you from here on in!

Hey, don't you get it? It's like grade school, and he has a big ol' crush on you. That must be it! Otherwise, what else could explain so many words with so little meaning?

Honestly AB I think that the biggest problem is that YOU KEEP TALKING... Stop talking and I won't have to tell you how wrong you are.
mdmrules: Ab and I have had our differences on this board before, but I always find Ab's posts passionate and well though out. On the other hand, I have yet to find much of what you have had to say all that insightful.
So listen, we are all here to share opinions and argue back and forth about who on the habs is performing and who is not. If you would like to yabber on about other posters, then back it up with some useful stuff as well...
