His contract is worth 3.5. Does that mean that the team that picks him up is only responsible for 1.75? Since NJ is only looking to ditch salaries to make cap room for Elias' return, they probably wouldn't take any trade except for prospects or draft picks.

Grab him at this time in the season it couldnt hurt. If we can pay bonk 2.5 or 3 mill... to be a ...geez cant think of a word for bonk and what he does for the team Anyways Mogilny is a decent forward so why not

I think that the team assumes all $3.5 on the first waiver wire. If Mogilny clears waivers, is sent down, then recalled, then he has to clear waivers again. If he doesn't, then each team bears 50% of his salary.
YOu beat me to the post. Mogilny is an excellent player. Still is. I've always thought he'd be a great hab, bringing a little of the old time skill and speed to the team. A real joy to watch skate, even getting on in years.

Grab him Bob, please!
I have to disagree The guy has serious back and hip problems. He's got a great shot, but I can't imagine that the Habs are gonna throw that kind of money around again for an old and broken has-been. There's too much downside and risk.
Fans are already getting restless with Bonk's money and Theo's $4.5 million this year ...

I know. I know. But it's hard not to think of him the way he's been in the past. And he's got 12 goals and obtained 13 master keys this year, not bad with his concussion and hip problems

It's too bad that San Jose pulled the heist of the century before we were able to do a little grand-larceny. Won't see another deal like that for a long time ...
1/2 the season is over...only half hsi salary for this year remains...he IS owed $3.5 m next season however...but, the cap is rising next year.
if a guy clears waivers, and is sent down, then he must clear re-entry waivers to return (only if he is physically sent down). THEN the team who claims him only is on the hook for 1/2 his total REMAINING salary.
I say take him. This team has been accused of lacking goal scoring and veteran presence. Well have a look Bob, because here's both of those things and you won't even have to give up anything except a little bit of cap room.
Pick up Mogilny for the balance of the season and then buy him out over the summer - he could be the little push The Habs need to guarantee a playoff position. Image a healthy line of Kovalev-Saku-Mogliny and the way AlMo can pass Kovalev could shoot out the lights........
New Jersey Devils put forward Alexander Mogilny on waivers
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CP) - Veteran winger Alexander Mogilny was placed on waivers by the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday.
The move came a day after the return of forward Patrik Elias, but a source indicated Wednesday that the Devils still have $900,000 room under the salary cap with Mogilny in the lineup so the club was not forced to put him on waivers.
"There was cap room prior to this happening, it had absolutely nothing to do with the cap," Devils GM and interim coach Lou Lamoriello told The Canadian Press. "It was just a personnel decision."
In fact, Elias would not have been allowed to play Tuesday night had the Devils been over the cap.
Still, should another club claim Mogilny and his $3.5-million US salary off waivers, that would give the Devils a little more breathing room under the cap.
Elias was back in the lineup Tuesday night against Florida after missing several months with hepatitis and recorded two assists in a 3-0 win over Florida.
Mogilny, who scored 43 goals for the Devils' Stanley Cup-winning team in 2000, was re-signed for $7 million over two years in August after playing three seasons with Toronto. The forward was third on the Devils in scoring this season with 12 goals and 13 assists in 34 games but had not scored in his last six games.
"We're going to see what the waivers bring and go a step at a time but this was not a cap decision," Lamoriello said.
