Gainey's Options
Permalink Closed

Was listening to the Team 990 today. The discussion centered around Trade options and how Gainey has kind of painted himself into a corner with some of his trades and signings. They also mentioned (take this for what it is worth) some supposed "inquiries" regarding available Habs. Thsi sums up what was said:

a) Gainey is stuck with Theo, even if he plays horribly the rest of this year and 2 more. Any inquiries that have been made regarding Theo have asked the Habs to pick up half his contract (2.5 or more a year). This would be applied to the cap for Montreal. As well, the trade of Garon for Bonk means that Montreal would need to have a decent goalie included in any trade for Theodore. In other words, we pray Theo gets back to form because he is here for 2 1/2 years. Tony Marinaro made a good point. It would not look very good on Gainey for him to trade Theo and pick up half his salary after having just signed him to that big contract (and giving Garon away)

b) No one wants Dagenais (duhh that is a revelation?!) and he is on a one way contract meaning that they pay him his NHL salary if he goes to Steeltown. One opinion has it that Julien is being told to play Dagenais as much a spossible in the hopes that he will score a few goals and they will get something back besides a puck bag for him. Ditto with Ribieoro. Ribs has 2 more years 11 million on his little contract. Strangely no NHL teams pounding down Bob G's door wanting the Portuguese flash in their uniform. Same with Bonk. Apparently BG has been shopping him around with no bites.

c) A bit of interest has been expressed in Souray but most of the interest has been in Markov, and, to a lesser extent, Rivet. Koivus is safe (not that he should or would be traded) because a few GM's that have asked about him want performance guarantees from Montreal (he must play x number of games a year) so they are obviously concerened with Sak's health problems. Apparently BG's phone rings alot asking about the services of Markov

Like I said take this for what it is worth but these guys seem to have a good ear on the pulse of the Bell Centre offices. Bob has indeed painted himself into a corner. With this in mind, my buddy And-O may have his dream realized. The one way Gainey can save face is by canning the coach (at least short term).

Doesn't make much sense what they are saying for Sak since he's unrestricted after this year anyways. The Habs would never offer guarantees for next year. That would be up to the player to sign that kind of agreement. Tony Marinaro is a pinhead and shouldn't even be on the radio. He comes up with the weirdest trades some time. They keep shuffling him around and soon he will be out on the street like Dino Sisto.

John- actually the interest in Koivu was back when Gainey was trying to sign him to a multi- year deal. But liek I said, take all of it with a grain of salt (like the Ted Nolan for coach rumour when he is under contract in Moncton). Some of what they said makes sense though.

Sounds pretty much like the general consensus amongst our little group of experts!

i'm not sure where you got your info... Ribeiro is making 1,178,000 for one year, not 11 million for 2 more. He's a restricted free agent at the end of the year. but yes he is useless.

Good post Barry! I for one have been trying to get the message across that Gainey has been making mistakes since he set up shop with the Habs. Only one good move thus far and that's the Kovy trade only because he got lucky and signed him. Oh, I should give him credit for the Begin singing! Other than those two players, he has sucked and his patience and wisdom has not improved the Habs since he took over!

Seems to me that the only poor move was for Bonk, as the drafting has been good, no hold-outs and decent contracts, Murray is looking better than Hossa, and Ward was replaced by Dandenault who plays forward and D.  So where has he 'sucked'?

He has only been in on the last two drafts so too early to tell! Please tell me what he has done that's so special!

How about Kovalev? You could argue it was originally a rent a player, but it worked out very well.

Edit: I misread he post, my bad. Gainey has good in the draft, but not excellent.
