Poll #3: character or stats?
Permalink Closed

You have one trade to make. You are giving up a player with potential that hasn't performed up to expectations, but still has decent numbers (I'm not thinking of anyone specific now...well..)

Question: Would you trade for a guy who will bring proven leadership character to the Habs or a guy with loads of stats, but not much personality?

Winning teams need character, but I guess it would depend on what a particular teams needs are.  Character only goes so far if a team can't put the puck in the net.

I gather we all know who you might be talking about, it's a tough call, but I'd say this Mtl team at the moment needs character and heart, especially with so many rooks in the lineup at the moment.

So, I'd vote for Character (with some point potential throw in for good measure . . . I can dream after all).

Stats. And hopefully he buys into the system

Well, we already made that trade of potential for character with Hossa for Murray (The Bigger Begin).  My first choice would actually be for a two-way D, but since that is not an option, I will have to go with Barry and hope for a scoring center who will play the system.

The most successful team over the past half decade in any sport has been the New England Patriots.  A team absolutely "loaded" with character guys.  Perhps not a whole bunch of Pro Bowlers, but three rings in four years ain't bad.  I guess And-O's assertion that "a blind squirrel finds a nut every so often" will have to be amended to "a blind squirrel finds three nuts in four years".  Luck???  I think not.  Character, and guys who will subjugate their own stats for the good of the whole, will get it done.  F stats.

A bit of a different dynamic in football, but teamwork and heart works wonders.  Look at the stats guys we got and that sucked - Leeman, Berezin, Jerkoffski, Hossa to name a few that pop in my head.  Compare them to what impact the charater guys have had.  I don't think you can say that any of those clowns did more for us than Begin has.

So, I say character.  If a stats guy fits the system or, as was said, buys into the system, then he becomes a character guy.  And we've gotten our hands on one of those - Kovalev.

And how sweet is the Murray for Hossa starting to look?  A little reversal of fortunes for those guys lately.

I want to amend my previous statement.  Not "F stats", as stats are important.  Stats = talent = wins.  What I was trying to say was, stats alone cannot do it.  Like Barry said, stats, but within the system and the team concept, make for a winning combination.  I think of guys like Kirk Muller who had the stats, but he also had balls made out that stuff they use to make bowling pins.  THAT's a player.  Wouldn't you love to have a half dozen of those type guys on your squad?
