Does anyone else enjoy the "hidden microphone" that RDS puts on one player every game? I really enjoyed hearing Begin speaking to the refs - quite a normal conversation between two friends, seemed like. At one point when they took an assist away from Begin, he joked to the ref that he needed all the points he could get.
On a related note, at one point you could hear Coach Julien speaking to Begin after a play, giving him instructions - in French, even though another non-francophone player was right there listening in - Ryder, I think it was. I found that very strange, especially where he was giving instruction (as opposed to a private conversation for that specific player's benefit only). I would have thought that Julien always spoke in English behind the bench, so that everyone could understand, no matter who he was talking to. Anyone else find that odd?

not really, its better this way because all of the players except the euro's feel comfartable (The Euro's probobly do to) because they are being spoken to in their first language. What was it that was said? Would it have affected Ryder's game? i would guess not but...
Ya, Nil, I love that mike (not the Ribiero one but the RDS one.) Begin let out quite the screech after the 3rd goal. His comment to the linesman was that the ref was a dog for trying to steal his points. At least, I remember him saying "Ce chien", which is "That dog".
About speaking French to French players, I manage a bilingual group. It is easier to get the message across in the employees mother toungue OR it is easier in the language the manager is more confortable with. So, I'm sure he has his reason. I didn't catch the session, but I imagine Ryder wouldn't have caught much either way.
Could be part of Julien's overall thing about not wanting to show players up in front of their teammates. If you speak to the guy in French it means the guy sitting next to him might not totally catch his drift.

I agree with that, but in this particular case he was giving instruction, not chastising a player. I would think the players who are within earshot but don't understand what's being said would feel a little left out. I'm married to a unilingual English speaker, and I know when some of my family members speak French to me in front of her, she feels left out. Even when spoken to in French, I reply in English for her benefit.

No big deal one way or another as far as I see it...
As for the microphone, I love it. Did anyone catch it when the mic was on little Sidney Crosby? The kid shouts to other players like a seasoned veteran... so impressive!

Well, I wasn't going to bring that one up, but since you mention it................. Yes, he sounds like a seasoned veteran. He'll be a great coach some day.

At one point Crosby was telling his teammates what to do, Mario, who was sitting beside Crosby on the bench, actually shifted away from him.
I didn't find it impressive, I thought it was a little arogant.

I meant no offense Nil. I just think he should maybe get some more time in the league before he starts telling the 5th greatest hockey player of all time (according to my list) how to play hockey.

I don't see a single Canadien on this list. You were joking right?
1. Lafleur 2. Belliveau 3. Richard 4. Harvey 5. Gretzky

Well, I was joking about Crosby at #4 (but ask me again in ten years).
I'd probably put the Rocket at #5, right behind Mario at #4.
You've obviously got your Hab glasses on, plouf. How about Rick Vaive at #5? Your token Islander!

All-time PEI list
1. Al MacAdam, 2. Brad Richards 3. Rick Vaive 4. Bobby MacMillan 5. Gerard Gallant
honourable mention: Errol Thompson
Not bad for 100,000 people, eh?
I don't think there was a single guy in my grade 6 class that didn't play hockey.

I have always marvelled at that one myself, i.e. the amount of talent that came from such a small place. I think it's more like 135,000 people, but your point is well-made. I think it's that there isn't much to do for boys in the winter but hockey. (I know this is a gross generalization, but much of what PEI is known for - golf, beaches, Anne, etc. - disappears in the winter.) Cape Breton is another such place - Al MacInnis, Mike MacPhee, Bobby Smith, etc.
What about Billy MacMillan on your list of PEI greats?
And here's a trivia question for you: Who is the only PEIslander to have played for the Habs? (I think I'm right on this one.)

That'd be Johnny Chabot (note Acadian name, Nil D.).
Reason Detroit got to be a popular team in PEI for a while was they had Chabot and Gerard Gallant and they had a decent team, with Demers coaching. Every year they'd get killed in the semis by Edmonton though.
(I wouldn't call Billy MacMillan a great. He made the NHL, but didn't do much when he was there. The six I listed were all solid players.)
my home town's not doin too bad for NHL players either. 120 000 people maybe less now and we have some pretty good players from Thunder Bay the Staal brothers come to mind even if the 2 younger brothers arn't in the NHL yet. Alexander Auld as well, whos playin fantastic in Vancouver.

The little town of Parry Sound (pop 5,000 or so) didn't do too badly either, on a talent-per-population basis. Terry Crisp is from there, along with an obscure defenseman whose name escapes me at the moment.......

I had the pleasure of playing hockey under Al McAdam at ST. Thomas University in the mid 1980's. What a class act this guy is. A total gentleman. Actually I would compare him alot to Julien. Al had the respect of his players and we worked hard for him but he was not a spit and holler and throw water bottles kinda guy. Ironically, after I graduated I went to work for a company in Nova Scotia Nil'd and one of my co-workers was a guy named Wade Bower who was a top University and Junior referee at the time. He told me he use dto cut us some slack on some calls because Al was so respectful to him.
By the way, my New Brunswick top 5 for what it is worth:
1. Danny Grant 2. Mike Eagles 3.Greg Malone 4. Wille O'Ree (the first black player in the NHL way back when. Pick up his book at Chapters it is a good read. Boy did this guy go through alot because of his skin color) 5. Buster Harvey

I think you missed a biggie - Gordie Drillon, a former Hab, and the last Maple Laff to have won the NHL scoring race - in the 1940's, no less!

Never met Al MacAdam, but I've played against several of his brothers and nephews (though not hockey, soccer - they all play on one soccer team every summer), and my mother went out with his first cousin. PEI is a small place.
The first NHL game I watched in person (which was not a Habs game!) featured Al MacAdam, Dino Ciccarelli as a rookie, Harold Snepsts, etc...
My hometown isn't up there yet but its coming (Dollard) we got Angelo Esposito the next big name ripping it up in the QMJHL and is only 16. We also have Cory Pecker who is playing in the ECHL but last year played in the AHL. He went through a lot of troubles from his problems with his health (Crones) and he went undrafted. A very nice guy he was one of my cousins camp counsellers.

Pecker, eh? If his sister married Murray Head, she'd be................................ oh, never mind.
