Just for fun, let's hear from you on this topic: Players who were not particularly good, or even noted as "unsung heroes", but for some reason, you had a soft spot for them. Here are some of mine from over 40 years of Hab fandom:
Jim Roberts
Don Awrey
Rick Chartraw (we could use a crusher like him today!)
Bill Nyrop
Mike McPhee (maybe unsung - or sung - but one of my all-time favs - and a local boy to boot!)
Peter Svoboda
Rick Green (love those reliable stay-at-home Dman)
Benoit Brunet (spent more time in hospital than on the ice; could have been a great one)
J.J. Daignault (maybe it's just the name....)
Oleg Petrov (yes, I admit it! I love those water-beetle type guys.)
There are many others, but these few jump to mind.

Great topic Nil! Lately I've been dreaming of those great Hab defensemen of old (for some odd reason...) Lots of them come to mind, including some unsung heroes. Anybody remember Terry Harper? How about Pierre Bouchard? They didn't wind up getting coaching jobs in New Jersey, but they were two tough sumbitches and made opposing players think twice about approaching the Habs net. Then there was Rod Langway -- he looked pretty darn good in a Habs jersey, too.
As for forwards, I was always amazed by the Little M. He only played one way for the most part, but when his head was in the game and he was on the go, he had some unbelievable moves for a big guy. Steve Shutt was another one. He let his stick do his talking — and it spoke up pretty frequently. And Rejean Houle -- his face was enough to scare the other team off the ice. But my all-time soft spot has to go to Claude Lemieux. I was living in Hartford when he scored that OT goal in game 7 of the quarterfinals and I owe him forever. Talk about playing hard -- he was tough and he would never stop 'til the puck was in the net or he was in the penalty box. I'd take a whole team of Lemieuxs, including one in net!
Being a goalie my "soft spots" would have to be in that department. First of all, Steve Penney. He came in and stood on his head but then disappeared..kinda an unsung hero. The other would be Michel "Bunny" Laroque. Did not play alot behind Dryden but when he did usually won.

Zholtok and Petrov, for sure... I loved watching Petrov even if he was ultimately frustrating Mike McPhee Bunny Larocque Guy Carbonneau. I know he's not an unsung hero, but he's my all-time favourite
Ahhh yes Guy Carbonneau. I don't think unsung, buy perhaps my favorite all time non 40 goal man. This guy was smart, could score and play defense. And was not a "flopper". Did you ever see him get hit and stay down? Love that guy!!

Ah yes, Terry Harper! I remember him well. But I can't say I ever liked him. The slapshot became popular while he played, but he never learned to hit one. He couldn't even lift one off the ice if he had to! Thanks for the "great topic" comment, but your list isn't exactly what I had in mind, player-wise. Langway won the Norris Trophy; Steve Shutt's in the Hall of Fame; Pete Mahovalich was a 100-point + man. I was thinking more of no-names (the Terry Harpers of the world). But I also liked all the guys you named - except Terry Harper.

Slyvain Turgeon, was one my favourites going up too bad things didn't work out, Loved Pierre too. Damphousse,Richer could of been better but for some reason things faded. And one more Patrick Poulin had all the great tools speed, size and ability but was kinda a flop
The one player that I thought was coming into his own and played with alot of heart was Trent Mcleary. That shot to the throat still is vivid in my memory! He showed alot of guts to try to come back from that but he couldn't get his wind! Spend your whole life working hard to improve for the NHL and have it cut short like that is sad!
I'd have to say that my favorite Hab was Carb! I also liked Russ courtnall especially after I found out he was abused as a child! He was a speedster and had a good release!
