In the new NHL, with the salary cap at 39 Million and the new rules to allow more scoring (no blue line and smaller goaltending equipment) the days of having only 1 good goaltender are over. With a hard cap at 39 M, the risk of losing a goaltender due to injury could result in the team not making the playoffs. (you could trade for a goaltender, provide one is available but have to make cap room when he comes back). I also find it hard to see how 1 goaltender will win 50-60 games in a season, those type of stats are over.
With the parity and the high scoring, all goaltenders will have good and bad games (go through streaks when they play well and when they don't). A good team will have two goaltenders that can start at any moment.
My opinion the position of goaltender went from one where they can carry the team to the cup to where it is only a component on a good team.
Can you image a team like Ottawa losing D. Hasek right before or right after the playoffs, ouch!
I think they went too far. Ok the longer passes are ok. The smaller goalie equipment, but this business about players being able to stand in the crease and get away with it is not fair. There have been more goals scored that are not being called back. There has ben way too much goalie interference this year. They moved the blue lines, made an area where the goalies cannot play the puck, made another area where they can touch the puck but cannot freeze the puck, made smaller equipment, and not allow more interference. I think the NHL went too far. I know we are doing well now, but it will only be a matter of time before we are a victim of the new rules. Or should I sat Theo will be a victim of these new rules and we will lose a big game because of it.
