I was amazed that he got by all those years without knowing how to read or write. It's simply amazing that he hid it so well.

I would be petrified every day. Can you imagine, always thinking that you're going to be found out. And then running a cup victory on top of that. Incredible

Absolutely stunning!  I have heard him speak many times, and he is very articulate in both English and French.  Hard to fathom how someone would have such a mastery of the spoken word but no ability with the written one.  I met Eddie Shack about 5 years ago.  He is also completely illiterate.  He gave me a copy of his ghost-written autobiography.  He said "they tell me it's a good book" - he himself cannot read it. 


I'm a volunteer tutor in a local literacy program.  I would recommend that to anyone; it is frustrating but very gratifying work.
