Ok..8 games in..I know it is early but we have all seen enough to get an idea of what the "new NHL" will look like. So I am starting this thread to get everyone's HONEST opinion. I do not want to have your opinion tainted by how you feel the rules benefit or hurt our Habs. Just an unbiased overview. Here is what I think:
Look, I like the fact that there is more goal scoring. That they want the game opened up for the skilled players. But like the NHL is want to do, they have gone completely from one extreme to the other. We have gone from allowing open field tackles to a game of touch football. We may as well put flags on the players and they can grab one as he goes by. I KNOW there is an adjustment period. But I have to agree with Grapes on this one. We are seeing a game now that consists of guys blowing down the wings unharmed, crashing the net. Guys who are 5' nothing are standing in front of the net screening while the dmen blast away from the point. Why? Because you cannot touch anyone! You tell me how a defenceman is supposed to move a guy in front now? You can't check him unless he has the puck (by then it is too late), you can't tie him up.... It reminds me of baseball. The guy gets a hit and stands on first base having a chat to the first baseman. Now the opposing centre can stand there and chat to the dman waiting for the puck to be blasted..ludicrous.
I think they just need to allow a bit more contact now. Souray's penalty last night was stupid. He taps the guy on the waist with his stick..3 second delay, guy falls down..penalty, high sticking. It is at the point that a gust of wind as you go by a player warrants a penalty if he falls.
Goalie pads- really see no difference out there except Garth Snow who went from looking like The Terminator to Danny Devito
Goalie area behind net- really neautral on this one too. I don't think it ha schanged the game much
Delay of game for firing the puck over the boards- stupid, stupid and stupid., But at least the goalies are not the only ones penalized now.I always felt that it was dumb to give the goalie a penalty for shooting the puck out becaus ewith that big stick he has little control of where it is going compared to a forward or dman. I guess this rule takes the pressure off the ref to have to make a judgement call now
The goalies need protection though. It is open season. Look at Theo last night. He never gets upset but he is tired of guys coming through the crease or standing there with one foot inside the blue. The dmen can't touch a guy in front of the net so the goalie gets to look at a guys ass all night. Anyon ewho has played goal will tell you that is no fun (unless you are gay). Again we went from one extreme to the other. Remember a couple years ago you could not have a hair inside the blue or it would be blown down..geesh NHL..happy medium?!?? Why does it have to be night and day with these guys??
No Red line- Love it..no more trap Opened up the game immensley
I am sure I habe missed some but these are the ones that come to mind..let the debates begin!

hahaha i know EXACTLY what you mean about watching a guys as all night while playing goalie. Its the most annoying thing to have a guy just stand there and bury ( or try to) any rebounds that come to him. Only i was pretty good at finding a way to mess him up before the shot came. If i saw a player winding up id give the guy infront of me a little shove and then get down to make the save. Only i think the goalie would get a penalty for that now also. Maybe they can install tv's on the back ends of players pants so the goalie doesnt have to watch @$$ all night. Could work as a good distraction tool also to get the goalie out of the game ( mentally ) and take advantage and score. hmmmm

1. I like more goal-scoring, too. Not the 12-10 blowouts from the Oiler years, but the level of today is about right. Less contact is a good thing, but the reffing has been inconsistent, to say the least.
2. Souray's penalty was actually on a play that happened a few seconds seconds before, away from the play. The guy later fell down over something else, and that was not called. On the replay, it seemed like a good call (unlike other times during the game!)
3. Agree. They're big anough. I'd like to see one of these guys play with Terry Sawchuck's old gear!
4. I didn't think I would, but I actually like this one. Twice last night I saw Theo start to go after a puck, but get back in his crease when he realized that the oncoming puck was not going to get to him inside the trapezoid (rhombus?). So it does seem to have affected the play, and lead to more offense since the goalie has less option to act as a third d-man.
5. I like this change too. The more black-and-white we can make it for the refs the better!
6. Agree - they need to protect the goalies in the same vein as the stricter rules protect the skilled forwards.
7. Love it too. You never know when a Hail Mary pass will lead to a breakaway. Bulis seems to be cashing in on this new rule - now if he could only score on one of his numerous chances...............
So overall, Barry, I agree with you most of your comments. The new rules, on balance, have been a great boost to the former trap-laden NHL.

OK- I can see that my "New Rules Thread" has drawn such massive response that Mario must have had to block responses. Thanks to my fellow Maritimer Nil'd ...I love you buddy.

I'm assuming you mean that in the most platonic sense.................

Here's my opinion, and I've been a Habs fan since the mid-late sixties . . .
1 - I really like the new rules pertaining to contact. You shouldn't hit a guy if he doesn't have the puck, defensemen are going to have to adjust as to how to tie a player up in front of the net. It was rediculous before where the crosschecking and mugging in front of the net went on all the time. I like this rule change, and I agree the ref's have been very inconsistent.
2 - There's no need for slashing or high-sticking.
3 - I love this change, I see a little difference, Theo seems to have had a bit of a problem.
4 - Like it!
5 - Also like it.
6 - I agree, protect the goalies.
7 - LOVE IT! Just what the game needed.
So far I'm really enjoying the hockey I've been watching. As far as I'm concerned, if the NHL doesn't go back to their old habit's (which they've done in the past) then the lockout was worth it. And even more so when considering the playing field is more even now with the salary cap, which also makes the Habs chances in the next few years that much more plausible.
Sorry Barry, haven't been around much, but here is my reply.
1- I love the increased offence. For me though, it is not about goals, but about chances and flow and the game has tons of it right now. There will be even more when players and refs get used to the rule changes and there is more consistency from both. My main issue is the diving and the goalie interference... they have to be called!
2- I am all for more contact, but only the bodychecking kind. no stickwork... stick is for the puck only and I don't want to see it on an opponent's body. If they call all the goalie intereference then there will be less crease crashers. D-men have to learn to tie up their opponents stick with their own.
3- Agree with smaller pads.
4- Agree with goalie area.
5- Agree with puck over glass.
6- THEY HAVE TO CALL ALL INTERFERENCE! (I had my knee re-arranged by a crease crasher)
7- Don't EVER bring the red-line back!
So far the rule changes have been very good and will hopefully rise to being great. I will get to see them first-hand tonight, as I just got free ticks in the reds! Wooohooo! I will let you all know how the game goes!
In my humble opinion, while the Habs may be benefitting as much as anyone from the new rules, I am not enjoying all the penalties and power play opportunities.
At first, I was just as confused as the offending players seemed to be, as to why a penalty was being called. And now, I am getting a little bit better at understanding what the refs are going to call, but, I still think the flow of the game is being disrupted. Don't get me wrong, I hated the clutching and grabbing in the neutral zone, however, a defenseman can no longer clear the front of his net or even play aggressively against a 2 on 1 for fear of putting his team down one man.
Losing the two-line offside and tag-up are great. They not only keep the flow of the game going, they also seem to speed it up.
P.S. I hope they take out the red line in my seven year old son's league, as he seems to always trip on it.

My opinionis only concerning to penalty rules. I donīt like it so much than before the rules changed, With new rules itīs almost same as European hockey and Iīve watched that my hole life. It was nice when I could watch NHL matches on TV cause it was so different, hard tackles, fights(although I have seen only 4 fights on habs games on TV Wilkie, Stevenson, Corson and Komi), but nowadays when I go watch a game of my hometown team which plays Finnish SM-league so game is more physical than most NHL games I have seen this year and it makes me angry cause I pay 27 euros/month(about 25 US dollars) to see couple of NHL games/week. And what I see, teams are playing half of the time 5-3 5-4 pp cause some defender gave little crosscheck to forwars back in front of the goal or gave little slash and sometimes even open ice hits arenīt allowed. I hated that hooking, grapping and clutching too but this is stupid, and I liked to see more fights those spiked up the game.
Sorry folks but I was forced to write this, so now I donīt bother my wife with these things.
Thing is, the players and refs will get used to the rules.
Explain to me why hooking a player with your stick should in any way be legal. We just got so used to it over the years that we don't even remember the days when there was less of it.
I have seen too much goaltender interference, look what happened to Hasek tonight. Theo has been hit too and they allow the score and they should be calling back these goals. What happened to the days when a foot in the crease disallowed a goal. The other problem is one night one ref does it one way and another night the ref does it another way. Watching the Buffalo game tonight, a guy cleared the puck it went over the glass but struck the glass on the way out no penalty. Now thats just waht happened last night and CJ was telling the ref the puck hit the glass. The ref did not care maybe if the puck hit the ref in the ASS it would have made a difference Oh am I going to get in trouble for that one ???
