Defensive zone play needs improvement
Permalink Closed

After watching a few games this year, the habs defensive zone play needs improvement.  While some defensive players have struggled (Souray, Rivet), only Markov has improved.  The habs tend to lose control of the puck and have a hard time clearing out of the zone. The habs d-men need to be faster, to be able to get to the puck and clear the zone. Also, I noted that some of the habs wingers were not in position in the d-zone, leading to some costly turn-over. The habs have been winning games for the sole fact that they were able to score more than there opponents. Which is a surprise.

My opinion, I would try to dump Rivet and Bouillion and get some d-men who are fast and strong with the puck

Pat- I cannot really agree with you on this one. We have had our moments defnsively , yes fro sure.  But if you look around the league you will see the same thing. I watched some of the Toronto game last night (wore out the batteries in my remote). Bryan McCabe who, in my opinion, is one of the top 6 dmen in the league (god it pains me to say that) looks lost out there at times. He goes to check a guy, or hold him up, and then looks to see where the ref is. These new rules are ablsolutely ridiculous. There is no consistency. On the Habs, I think that Souray, more than anyone, is struggling with them. I think we have the talent back there. They are just gonna have to learn to adapt.

The new rules rule.  The defense around the league is beleaguered.  They'll be weak for weeks.  Just allow time to adjust.

I actually think Boullion has benifited from the new rules. In this new league defensmen have to be mobile and very smart one on one. In the old days bigger defensmen where the thing because you needed them to pound guys in front of the net. The only thing they are good for now is the reach advantage(which is an asset). If you are big, you better be smart and mobile as well

So IMO Markov is the ideal d-man to benifit as he is mobile and smart but did lack size. Bouillion also has benifited. So I really have to disagree on the Boullon thing. If anything he is one of our top 3-4 D-men at the momment.
