Admittadly I haven't seen any games yet this season but I have caught most of the Canadiens action on CJAD. While the games do seem exciting all this talk about the new ice age and that certain types of players are redundant brings a smile to my face. Fast, free flowing, high-scoring hockey might be the fans dream, but it's a coaches nightmare. Already before the season started I read some NHL coach talking about how he was going to play1-3-1, clog the neutral zone, etc, etc. No surprise there, the Swedes have been playing that way for years. It's no accident that some of the best defensive forwards in the NHL are from that particular country. Then of course there is the Czech style. For as long as I can remember they've sat back in their own zone soaking up the pressure, content to wait for the chance to play that one break away pass up the middle...no wonder a lot of real fast forwards and good goalies are from THAT particular country. You can't really blame either though, it was the only way they could ever put one over on the Soviets. What I'm trying to say here is enjoy it while you can boys and girls, it ain't gonna last for long...
