Okay, I don't like losing to the Leafs (like what have they done in the last 35 years?). I HATE losing to boston. Ottawa worries me lots.
But what frightens me beyond anything posed by any of those teams is what's happened in past years -- the NHL has vowed to crack down on obstruction. It works great for a while, and then the refs start letting things go and the slower, larger players creep back into the game. Does anyone remember the year Saku was leading the league in scoring until he tore up his knee? There've been previous attempts to 'clean things up', but they've fallen by the wayside and we're seeing a graphic demonstration of how far the league had descended.
So, while Theo's play is not stellar. Last night, he was ordinary and gave up a big rebound that led to a soft goal. Belfour blew the first goal, too. For now, there has to be something about the hockey braintrust bringing Theo to Team Canada's camp. I'm willing to give him some time. Let Rollie work with him. Sorry, but it's a little early to bring Hackett out of retirement (and even he got roasted at the end).
Right now, my math tells me we're on pace for a 110-point season (which I'll take). The Kiddie Corps is flying. Hell, the whole team is flying -- and, like every other team in the league, we need seasoning and some players more than others.
But write your MP, Congressman, or local referee's union -- keep those obstruction calls coming. If we revert to the late 20th Century style, then the smallish, fast and skilled team that Bob's put together -- will be hooped. THAT's what elevates my anxiety level.
Yes , right now we are on the pace for 110. I see at 90 point season ,and the reason for that is week by week we will all say. Oh let Rolle Melanson work with Theo. Lets give him the benefit of the doubt this week. You have Boston coming in Tuesday. They have been playing great (till last night on Ottawa) I think we are hard pressed to beat boston. Then we are 4-3. At what point do we all stop saying "it still early in the season lets give him the benefit of the doubt" I too started to be a fan in the seventies. I loved the year Dryden came up and they bounced Boston. This team needs more than Zednic coming back. You need someone to light a fire under ths ass of Souray. They always say a hot goalie gets you to the playoffs, but he is only as good as the defense in front of him. Souray is suppose to be the top defense man and as far as I am concerned he has not shown that to me yet this year. You got to admit sometimes he just skates around and it looks like he is not concerned about anything. After all he and theo played all last season they should not need any fine tuning. Maybe I am wrong and in fact I hope I am.
Yo DB, interesting that you focus on Souray; he worries me, as well. He was supposed to be our stud, but it looks as though the new NHL has passed him by -- at this point, who would you rather have: Souray or Bouillon? What I'm encouraged by is Komisarek's play against the leafs. He was a 3rd star and earned it. ln the meantime, we have Theo and Danis until Huet comes back; maybe we'll have a Hackett/Theo-type race at some point. For now, I'm enjoying the good stuff and am not quite ready to hit the panic button and trade Theo.
Interesting how you mention trading Theo... It's not a good idea and I'll tell you one very good reason why. Anyone want to know when Theodore will break out of his slump? Because that's exactly when, and Gainey will look like the world's biggest fool. Lets not pull another Roy here. We have a goalie who is capable of winning games, and will only improve as the season progresses.
I watched Garon the other night, then I watched luongo, then I watched Kiprisof(spelling) All these guys are the number one goalie for their respective teams. They are doing great. Yet here we are just like two years ago posting our heads offf that Theo will break out of the slump. Well, he played all last year just Like Souray. Both of them are not playing up to par. Souray looks like he could give a damn. I do not know if its just me but when he throws a hit it is like he is 2 seconds behind and he misses. His shot is no where as hard or accurate as it should be.(maybe he is hurting) I wont say anymore about Theo cause I have plowed that road and all has been said.
