No 12 and 5 jersey
Permalink Closed

The two jersey to be retired this year are no 12 and no 5. This was for Cournoyer, Moore and Geoffrion.  I think Guy Lapointe also wore no 5, so by default this includes him as well.

Im really not sure what the heck is going on. This morning i saw on TSN that there will be 3 numbers retired Robinson, Gainey and Cournoyer, along with Moore and Geoffrion, yet on their site it says only # 12 and 5 will be retired tonight. Makes no sense if you ask me. We'll see at game time. One thing is for sure, Zednik is NOT in the line-up.

I'm glad they're retiring the sweaters, and not the numbers. The Habs have had so many guys worthy of having their numbers retired, that if they included the number as well, we'd need players wearing numbers in the hundreds.

That the "problem" with such sustained success, to recognize everyone involved can get a little tricky, logistically speaking.

Oh well, it's a nice "problem" to have.

In total, 6 players will have their jerseys retired between now and the Habs' centennial in 2009.   Geoffrion (5), Cournoyer (12) and Moore (12) will have theirs retired this season.  With three more to go, I will speculate Robinson (19), Gainey (23), and Roy (33) in the next coming years.

I guess the Canadiens will retire the jerseys in numerical order which would explain why Robinson was slighted this time around (again!).

Note that no player since Robinson has worn #19 (Robinson last played for the Canadiens in 1989), and no player has worn #33 since Roy was traded back in 1995.

Other players over the past three decades have worn 5 and 12.  Just recently Stephane Quintal wore #5 (2003-04), and #12 was worn by Darcy Tucker in 1997-98.

I think we should consider Serge Savard and Ken Dryden.  (No. 18 and 29).  Don't get me wrong I think Patrick Roy number should be retired but I think Ken Dryden was a way better player than him. Ken Dryden played 7 season (he was injured and out for a season) and won 6 Stanley Cups.  That in itself is a feet.
